Shirley had assumed that Anathea, having gone through similar experiences, would understand and side with her. Yet Anathea remained expressionless and simply said, “It’s your choice. Don’t regret it later.”
She didn’t fall for Shirley’s attempts to sow discord between her and Gregory. Instead, she listened calmly and responded rationally.
In fact, Anathea seemed to have already foreseen Shirley’s fate.
Shirley reminded her of her past self–stubborn and unwilling to change her mind until forced to.
But back then, Anathea’s stubbornness had been fueled by love; Shirley’s was purely driven by fame and fortune.
Anathea felt no sympathy for Shirley because their positions were fundamentally different.
Shirley looked at Anathea, whose eyes showed no desire for high society life, and asked, “If you’re not after anything, what’s the point of marrying a man like that? Do you just like to suffer?”
Anathea pressed her lips together as Shirley’s words struck a chord deep within her.
Gregory noticed her reaction and frowned more deeply. He warned “If you don’t want Dominic to come after you, I suggest you keep quiet now.”
“Oh? Are you getting nervous?” Shirley raised her eyebrows, somewhat surprised. She hadn’t expected the man known as the Frost King to have such a side to him.
Gregory didn’t reply, but his expression darkened. He exuded an overbearing demeanor, sending chills down one’s spine.
Shirley glanced between him and Anathea. Realizing something, she said pointedly to Anathea, “Looks like you’re a little luckier than me.”
Without that, she turned and left.
Anathea watched Shirley’s retreating figure. Despite her defeat, Shirley didn’t slump in despair. Instead, she held her back straight, refusing to admit defeat in the slightest.
A gut feeling told Anathea Shirley wasn’t an easy woman to deal with. If Hannah were to face off against her…
Anathea pressed her lips together and exhaled.
“Annie,” Gregory called gently, his voice tinged with unease.
“Yeah?” Anathea snapped out of her thoughts and turned to him.
He hesitated before saying, “That wasn’t
trustworthy, and what she said is even less so.”
His tone was cautious, as if he were afraid Anathea might believe Shirley’s words.
“I know.” Anathea smiled faintly and held up the red ribbon and scissors she’d been holding. “Where should I put these?”
“I’ll take care of it.” Seeing that she didn’t pull away from him, Gregory secretly let out a sigh of relief and reached out to take
the ribbon and scissors.
At the same time, a staff member approached carrying a tray. Gregory casually placed the items onto it.
Out of the corner of her eye, Anathea caught a glimpse of the staff member. A flicker of puzzlement crossed her face. “That’s odd.
Gregory asked, “What’s wrong?”
“The scissors were handed by the event hostesses. Now there’s just this one staff member,” Anathea muttered. “Even though he’s wearing a mask, he looks familiar.”
