Chapter 350
“Yes,” Anathea replied without hesitation.
She’d already made a plan with Giselle so she could leave with Adam today. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have put a knife in her bag.
Originally, she meant to use her own life to threaten Gregory. She wanted to gamble to see if Gregory would back down and let her go if she risked her life.
But she didn’t expect Gregory to go as far as trying to kill Adam.
The knife she had planned to turn on herself ended up pointed at him instead. She never imagined Gregory would be so insane as to stab himself with the knife.
Blood had covered her hands. For the first time, he’d made her feel what it truly meant to have blood on her hands–his blood, no less.
That metallic scent–mixed with his sharp, possessiveness–had been burned into her lips by a deep, lingering kiss.
At that moment, she’d truly panicked.
Just now in the private chapel, the way he looked at her–the way he unconditionally sided with her and protected her–had thrown her into a storm of inner conflict.
But she didn’t want to give up the freedom she had fought so hard for just because her resolve wavered momentarily.
Besides, Gregory was still in the private chapel and couldn’t pay attention to anything else. This was her best chance.
Anathea pushed down the complicated emotions she was feeling and looked at Theo calmly. “Thank you for getting here in time to help me. Really, you were just in time.”
Otherwise, she would’ve gotten hit. Her baby could’ve been in danger.
Theo pressed his lips together. If Gregory hadn’t informed him, he wouldn’t have arrived so quickly.
But this time, he wanted to be selfish as he smiled. “Don’t mention it. I just wanted to protect you.”
Mustering up his courage, he finally decided to confess to Anathea. “Anathea, actually, I’ve liked you for a long ti-”
“Sorry,” Anathea cut him off.
She had already made up her mind to reject him, so she didn’t even let him finish his sentence.
“You’ll meet someone better,” she said sincerely.
Theo was stunned. He had worked so hard to summon his courage, and now it was over before it even began.
He smiled bitterly. “So, you’re rejecting me? This is the first time I’ve ever been turned down so quickly. It stings a little.”
“You didn’t finish saying it, and I didn’t hear it, so it doesn’t count as rejection. I hope that the next time we meet, we’ll both be doing well,” Anathea remarked gently.
That was the best farewell blessing she could think of for the both of them. After all, peace was the greatest happiness.
Theo looked at the smile on her face, countless thoughts swirling inside him. But in the end, he only responded with, “Alright.”
Anathea gave a small nod, then turned to look toward the private chapel.
Gregory’s words echoed in her mind. “She’s my wife–her child is my child. If anyone lays a finger on her, I will burn this place to the ground!”
Her heart involuntarily trembled, as though it had been tugged by thread.
When Anathea realized what that feeling was, she froze. She instinctively raised her hand to her chest and exhaled slowly.
Then, she turned and left, afraid that if she didn’t do it now, she might never be able to.
Just then, Giselle arrived in her car.
“Let’s go. We’ll pick up Mr. Jacobson together.”
Anathea nodded and got into the car without hesitation.
Theo stood where he was, watching her leave. It was difficult for him to calm down.
He used to think Anathea was the daughter of the person who caused his best friends‘ deaths and that he could never let her go easily.
He had even constantly fed that hatred to Gregory. He’d believed Gregory should be as harsh and unforgiving toward her as he
was.
Every time he saw Gregory show any hint of gentleness and softness toward Anathea, Theo would bring up what happened back then to remind Gregory.
He’d torn open Gregory’s wounds repeatedly, hoping to provoke him into indifference toward Anathea so Gregory could take revenge on Adam. Theo had just wanted to ease the guilt Gregory had carried all these years–for letting his selfishness get his best friends killed.
