Adrian didn’t want the atmosphere to remain so heavy and silent, so he took the initiative to speak. “Do you know I hurt my legs?”
Anathea looked up at him.
“Five years ago, I went to inspect a site for a project with three of my best friends. While we were crossing the bridge on the outskirts of Castenea, the bridge suddenly collapsed.”
Adrian recalled the scene from back then. “I fell to the bottom of the bridge. Fortunately, there was a large rock above me that blocked the falling steel and concrete. Maybe it was heaven showing me mercy, so it only cost me both my legs.”
A flicker of doubt crossed Anathea’s eyes.
He lost both his legs, and he called that mercy?
Adrian smiled faintly and continued, “Strange, isn’t it? All my friends died. One of them even fell into the sea, and his body wasn’t even intact when they found him.
“But I survived. If I’d come out of it completely unscathed, I don’t think I could’ve lived with it myself. The survivors suffer the most.”
Anathea said nothing for a while.
“At that time, Theo completely broke down and was ready to take his own life to follow them. But Greg didn’t dare show any emotion–after all, everyone else had fallen. He was the only one left.
“No matter what, he couldn’t succumb to the sorrow. He had to swallow all his grief and anger along with his tears and not let anyone else see. Greg might seem cold and heartless on the surface, but that’s not really who he is.
“He just carries too much on his shoulders, so he’s gotten used to showing only the hard, tough side of himself. Deep down, he’s still soft. He just doesn’t know how to express it-”
“You don’t have to defend him,” Anathea cut him off. “Not knowing how to express himself doesn’t make it okay for him to say hurtful things.”
The cruel words Gregory had said to her still echoed in her head. Every single one of them was etched in her mind. They were impossible to forget.
Hurting people because he couldn’t express himself was nothing but an excuse.
“Have you ever heard of alexithymia?” Adrian suddenly asked.
Anathea paused in surprise.
A dense crowd of bodyguards surrounded the Jacobson residence. From inside came the sound of a man crying out in pain, followed by a woman’s frantic sobs.
“Stop! Stop hitting him!” William’s wife, Violet Moore, tried to step in and stop them. But the bodyguards pulled her back harshly, keeping her from getting close.
No one knew how long it lasted, but eventually, the bodyguards who were beating William stepped aside.
William lay on the floor, barely breathing. Bruises and cuts were all over him, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. Sitting in front of him was a tall figure with his legs elegantly crossed, looking down at him from above.
William glared at him, gritting his teeth. “Gregory, how dare you gang up on me? Just you wait. I’m going to sue you!”
“Go ahead.”

Gregory casually tossed the documents in his hand right in front of William. “If you dare.”
When William got a clear look at the confession records on the pages, his eyes widened, and then guilt crept across his face.” No, it wasn’t me! It wasn’t me! They framed me!”
“Framed you? You still have the nerve to deny it?” As Gregory spoke, Theo stepped forward and stomped on William’s hand, breaking it.
A scream echoed through the hall. William clutched his crushed fingers, veins bulging on his forehead as he wailed in agony. “They say all the fingers are connected to the heart. If all ten are broken, the pain even affects the heart. I think that’s worth testing. We should try it on you.” Gregory smiled faintly as he glanced down at William.
Theo raised his foot again.
“Okay! It was me!” William couldn’t hold it anymore, his voice trembling.
“But it was only because Adam is a walking disaster! If he came back, the entire Jacobson family would be finished! He was already in prison. Why should he be let out just to drag us down with him?”
“Who ordered you to do it?” Gregory asked suddenly, as if he’d seen right through all the lies William was trying to bury.
