Chapter 406
“Gregory!” Michael snarled, his arm hurting so much that the vel on his forehead throbbed. He couldn’t get a good grip on his dagger, and it clattered to the ground, striking the hard surface wh a piercing ring. “I underestimated you!”
“Stop this nonsense now, and you’ll still die with all your limbs inct,” Gregory said monotonously.
Michael could not kill Vietor without a dagger. All that was left for regory to do was to slowly wrap up this mess.
But the next second, Michael cracked a deranged laugh. “You don’t really think this is all I have up my sleeve, do you, Gregory?”
Victor’s face paled as if on cue, and he coughed up a mouthful of blood so dark, it looked almost black. Gregory’s expression
faltered.
“This is the grand surprise I’ve prepared for you!” With his good arm, Michael hauled Victor, who was on the verge of death, before him like a human shield. None of the bodyguards dared to fire their guns.
Noting the crack in Gregory’s usually bland expression, Michael grew smug. “That was just the beginning! I will never stop hunting down and hurting the people you love, Gregory!”
He was still guffawing when he noticed the fleet of police cruisers gathered outside the abandoned factory. He immediately seized Victor and backed away.
“You can’t escape, Michael! Let the man go and surrender!” Martin shouted as the bodyguards around him closed in on Michael, surrounding him as if he were prey.
“Surrender?” Michael snorted, then glanced at the dark waters of the fiercely rushing river behind him. The next second, he tossed Victor aside as if the man were nothing more than trash; he had no use for Victor anymore.
The guards immediately rushed forward to catch Victor.
Meanwhile, Gregory raised his arm again and pulled the trigger. Alas, the previous injury he’d sustained on his arm made it hard for him to aim well. The bullet missed Michael’s head and instead went through his shoulder.
Michael grunted in pain as he toppled backward. Gravity pulled him down rapidly, and with a loud splash, he sank into the river and disappeared in the vicious, dark waters.
“Go after him! Bring him back, dead or alive!” Theo yelled after held hurried out of one of the police cruisers. He was on his way up to the third floor of the abandoned factory when he saw Gregory running, practically staggering, toward the man who had coughed up blood earlier.
Shock flickered in Theo’s eyes. He had never seen Gregory wear such an expression.
Gregory’s face was deathly pale, and fear filled his gaze. His hands shook as he hauled Victor upright and checked on his vitals. When Gregory saw the torture wounds that marred Victor’s body, a choking sound came from the back of his throat. “Dad…”
But Victor didn’t let Gregory finish his sentence. Once again, he clapped a hand over Gregory’s mouth and shook his head.
“Gregory…” Each word was accompanied by black blood that trickled from Victor’s mouth. “‘m so glad… so glad that I can see you again…”
“Hush, that’s enough. I’ll have the best doctor treat you. I’ll save you, I promise…” Gregory’s eyes turned red with tears.
Victor’s lips curled into a whisper of a smile, and he said tenuously “Take… care.”
The two words still hung in the air as Victor’s hand dropped from Gregory’s mouth, and his eyes fell shut.
At that moment, Gregory’s face crumbled. Tears streamed down his ashen face. He opened his mouth and willed his voice to come out, but in the end, only a hoarse cry escaped him.
“Dad,” he wanted to say.
The word had been ripped from his vocabulary the moment Gregory joined the Sinclair family.

Even when Victor lay dead in his arms, he couldn’t call Victor “Dad. He couldn’t cry for Victor, either, for Victor was no more than a stranger to the heir apparent of the Sinclair family.
Thunder boomed in the sky, which cracked open with a torrential downpour like it was crying for Victor on Gregory’s behalf. Like it was mourning the man who had raised Gregory for ten years
