Chapter 426
Anathea felt her entire world collapse as she stared at Natalie in shock and disbelief.
Did Natalie just say Adam was in a vegetative state?
No wonder Gregory had refused to let her use the phone. No wonder she wasn’t allowed to go out, and no wonder the doctors and nurses gave her vague answers every time she called the hospital. Not only did they dodge her question, but they also refused to let her speak with Adam.
No wonder Louie always changed the subject when she asked him about Adam.
From the very start, she was the only one in the dark.
Anathea felt as if a bloody gash had just torn through her chest. Her numbed fingers slowly curled inward. Her whole body trembled uncontrollably as she glared at Natalie.
She refused to believe this. Natalie must be lying to her.
However, Natalie didn’t even give Anathea the slightest chance to be in denial as she pulled out her phone and played a video.
Onscreen, Adam lay in the ICU, surrounded by frantic doctors trying to resuscitate him. At one point, the heart monitor flatlined into a single, piercing line.
“Dad!” Anathea thought.
Tears welled up in Anathea’s eyes, falling one after another.
Natalie looked down at her, smiling even wider at the sight of her breaking apart. She grabbed Anathea by the chin, forcing her to look up.
She said cruelly, “You know, I was standing right outside that room. I watched them resuscitate your dad over and over again. They broke two of his ribs trying to save him.”
Anathea shook her head and thought, “Stop talking! Stop talking!”
“Oh, you want me to stop talking? Too bad, I want to continue.” Natalie tightened her grip around Anathea’s throat.
“Do you know why you can’t bear to hear it? Because deep down, you know this is all your fault.” Her voice was low, almost gentle, but every word hit like a blade.
“If it hadn’t been for you, your dad would’ve never gotten out of prison, and he never would’ve been in that crash. If you hadn’t been so pathetically obsessed with Gregory back then, your dad would’ve never dared to drug him and force this marriage.
“And if it weren’t for you, Gregory would’ve never held that grudge. Your dad drugged him, sabotaged him, and got his closest friends killed. He deserved everything that happened to him.”
Every word Natalie said pierced right through Anathea’s heart, one bloody wound after another, each one oozing with scalding pain.
No…
Anathea’s vision blurred with tears.
Adam didn’t do those things. He was framed. She had already overturned the conviction. She had cleared Adam’s name.
But just like Natalie said, if she hadn’t fought to clear Adam’s name, he never would’ve been released and gotten into that car crash.
So, it was true. Anathea was the one who had triggered this tragedy She was the root cause of it all.
Natalie dug her fingers into Anathea’s jaw as her sharp nails scratched a bloody line down Anathea’s cheek. “You’ve been nothing but a curse since the very beginning. You’re the reason your dad ended up like this.

“You’re the reason Greg got hurt so many times trying to save you. And this time, people used you to threaten Greg. What right do you have to stand here and act as if you’re the victim?
“But it’s honestly a good thing because Greg finally came to his senses,” Natalie uttered, her eyes gleaming with satisfaction and smug pride.
“I knew a woman like you isn’t worth it for Greg to give up the position. A man as cold as him would never fall for someone that easily. I’ve been by his side for years, and I was the one who saved him when he almost drowned.
“Yet, I could never win his heart. So, what made you think you ever stood a chance against me? You heard him, didn’t you? He told Mr. Harvey to go ahead and bring your corpse to him. Whether you live or die means absolutely nothing to Greg.”
Anathea’s fingers slowly lost their grip, the light in her eyes disappearing.
Suddenly, a sharp, stabbing pain erupted in her lower abdomen. Something warm trickled out, but she was too numb to care. Natalie’s words echoed like a curse, looping endlessly in her mind. It was impossible to mute them out.
The floor beneath Anathea’s feet seemed to turn into quicksand, pulling her down with a heavy force. It felt as though countless hands were grabbing her by the ankles, slowly dragging her deeper and deeper into an endless abyss.
