Hannah sat quietly beside Anathea’s bed.

Ever since Anathea had been wheeled out of surgery, she hadn’t left her side. Only after seeing Anathea was truly okay did she heave a sigh of relief.
She looked at Anathea’s pale face. The redness around her eyes looked like rings of fresh blood, and the tears clinging to her lashes resembled two drops of it.
“Thea…” Hannah felt sorry for Anathea, but she tried to sound lighthearted. “If you’re feeling down, you can always lean on my shoulder.”
She tapped her own shoulder. “It’s not as broad as a man’s, but it’s sturdy enough for you to lean on. I could add a shoulder pad for extra comfort.”
Anathea looked at her–so serious in her attempt to be funny–and couldn’t help but smile. “I’m fine.”
“You’re lying.” Hannah reached out and wrapped an arm around Anathea’s shoulders, guiding her head to rest against her own. “You don’t have to be so strong around me. Just show your true feelings.”
Anathea was too gentle and always so considerate of others. As a result, she often exhausted herself emotionally. Hannah was afraid Anathea would wear herself out if she kept holding it all in.
“Thea, if you want to cry, just let it out. I’ll be here with you.”
At those words, Anathea finally broke down. Tears slipped slowly from the corners of her eyes, falling onto the blanket and spreading damp stains.
As Hannah listened to the soft sobbing, she gently patted her shoulder and pulled her into a warm hug.
She noticed the needle still in Anathea’s hand. She knew how afraid Anathea was of needles.
When they went for the HPV vaccine together before, Anathea had clung behind her, begging the nurse to be gentle.
Back then, Hannah had just laughed it off, teasing, “You’re scared of this? What will you do when you have to get shots in the future? Are you gonna cry and ask me to comfort you?”
“Damn you! Are you cursing me?” Anathea had punched her playfully.
Now, Hannah really regretted those words. She hoped Anathea would never have to endure more injections in her life.
She squeezed Anathea’s hand and asked in a hoarse voice, “Does it still hurt?”
Anathea shook her head and replied softly, “Not really. They gave me anesthesia. It was over before I even opened my eyes.”
“Hannah, I can’t keep my promise to make you my child’s godmother. I’m sorry,” she said, lowering her gaze.
“That’s not a big deal.” Hannah waved it off casually. “Most babies that don’t make it just aren’t meant to. Don’t be to most important thing right now is to take care of yourself.

“Finally! Thea’s smiling.” Chloe clapped beside her, then gave Hannah a thumbs–up. “Mommy, you’re amazing.”
“Of course.” Hannah flicked her hair. She teasingly hooked a finger under Anathea’s chin and imitated a flirtatious tone. “Hey, beauty, crying all alone here? How about you come home with me?
Anathea swatted her hand away. “Get a grip.”

Hannah noticed the faint curve of a smile at Anathea’s lips, but the warmth didn’t reach her eyes.
She was forcing a smile to keep Hannah and Chloe from worrying. Even now, she was thinking about how they would feel. Hannah pressed her lips together but held back the sadness welling inside. Softly, she asked, “Are you hungry? Do you want to eat something?”
Anathea wasn’t in the mood for food, but seeing the concern on Hannah’s and Chloe’s faces, she nodded. “I want to eat Mrs. Hale’s ravioli.”
“Okay, I’ll go get some for you,” Hannah said. She asked Chloe to stay with Anathea, then put on sunglasses and a mask before heading out the door.
Soon, only Anathea and Chloe remained in the ward.
