When Loule saw that the storm in Gregory’s eyes was finally calming, he finally let out a breath of relief. However, he was still exasperated.
“Do you really have to be like this with Anathea?”
Louie had overheard their bitter exchanges inside the ward and was at a loss.
“Anathea hates you because you’ve lied to her again and again and refused to tell her the truth. You always see things from your own perspective and expect her to accept everything you think is best. But have you ever asked what she actually wants?”
Gregory’s breath caught.
“I know you’ll say you’re doing all of this to protect her. But be honest with yourself. Have you really kept her safe?”
Louie pushed up his glasses and continued calmly, “You didn’t tell her about Adam’s situation. That gave Natalie a chance to provoke her. You put a tracker on her bracelet and sent a whole team of bodyguards to watch her. But it was because of all of that that you misjudged the situation, wasn’t it?”
Right. If he hadn’t been so confident that his precautions could keep Anathea safe, none of this would have happened.
He thought Anathea had stayed inside his protection circle, so he’d carelessly threatened Harvey. But he’d been unaware that Anathea upstairs in the attic had overheard everything, and it had broken her heart.
Gregory lowered his head. His red–rimmed eyes brimmed with regret.
Seeing that, Louie patted his shoulder. “If you want to have a good life with her, then clear up the misunderstandings. Stop hiding everything and making her guess. Can’t that mouth of yours say something useful other than just forcing kisses on her?”
Gregory didn’t answer. He just nodded silently.
Unsure if he had actually understood, Louie gave a helpless shake of his head. “It’s late. Get some rest.
Gregory nodded again and sank into the couch. The dim light made it hard to read his expression.

He quietly took out a recording pen and pressed play again. The sound of a steady heartbeat echoed into his ear, looping endlessly.
Louie yawned and collapsed onto the hospital bed.
Gregory had no idea how long the recording had been playing. By the time Louie was fast asleep, he finally rose to his feet and quietly made his way to Anathea’s ward.
She was already asleep. Her face looked ghostly pale under the moonlight, almost as if she might vanish into it at any second.
But she had been so radiant six years ago.
Gregory stared at her. Suddenly, a sharp pain surged in his chest like a tidal wave, overwhelming him.
With one hand against the doorframe, he clutched his chest with the other and bent over to catch his breath. Sweat dotted his forehead and trickled down his face.
“Mr. Sinclair…” A nurse hurried over when she saw him stumble.

Gregory turned around weakly and raised a finger to his cracked lips in a shushing gesture. “Quiet. Don’t wake her,
The nurse carefully helped him back into his ward.
“Don’t let anyone know about tonight.” Though weak, Gregory’s voice still held authority.
The nurse nodded repeatedly.
Even so, Louie got ahold of Gregory’s medical report the next day.
When he saw some abnormal results, his pupils constricted sharply, and he nearly dropped the papers. “Greg…” Louie rushed toward Gregory’s ward. On the way, he accidentally bumped into several carts but didn’t care. He slammed the door open and saw Gregory coughing violently. Blood spilled from his mouth into his hand. Louie almost collapsed on the spot. “Greg!”
