But Anathea nodded again, confirming that she had agreed. She needed his help to break free from this prison. Overwhelmed, Theo covered his mouth in excitement. But he quickly glanced outside the ward. Seeing no sign of Gregory, he breathed a small sigh of relief.
Knowing Gregory’s temperament, if he found out Anathea was determined to leave, he would probably lose it on the spot. There was no way Theo could let that happen.
So Theo lowered his voice and told Anathea, “I’ll figure out a way to arrange everything in the coming days. You just need to eat well and get your strength back. Trust me. I’ll help you get out of here.”
“Thank you, Theo,” Anathea said seriously.
“Oh, don’t say that. I’m happy to do it.” Theo smiled.
He was elated. Anathea finally needed his help. That meant she was ready to cut ties with Gregory, and he still had a chance.
This was probably what an average student suddenly getting admitted to a famous university by pure luck felt like. Theo could barely suppress a smile. Anathea had only said “thank you“, but it made him feel like he was floating on air. This worked better than all the efforts those women in Drunk Elysium made to win him over.
Anathea watched his beaming face and curled her lips into a faint smile. Yet, there was no real ripple of emotion in her eyes from the beginning to the end.
Theo chatted with Anathea a while longer before reluctantly leaving.
After carefully closing the door behind him, he turned to see Gregory sitting at the end of the hallway. Even though sunlight filtered through the curtains and fell on him, a thick shadow seemed to cling to him.
Theo pressed his lips and hesitated, but eventually walked over to him.
“I went to your place like you asked. The woman lying in the master bedroom was Jenny. She suffered a heavy blow to the back of her head, but luckily she was rescued in time and has woken up. And Bella, who was tied up in the storage room, has also been rescued.”
Gregory nodded slightly.
“And this. The bracelet you asked me to find.” Theo held out a bracelet toward Gregory. “It was left on the vanity in the master bedroom.”
Gregory froze. His hands trembled as he took it.
He had thought that installing a tracker on the bracelet, monitoring Anathea’s location at all times, and stoning guards outside the villa 24/7 would keep her safe.
But he hadn’t realized how foolish and arrogant that was. His self–righteousness had only sent her deeper into danger again and again.
And worse, he had said those painful words to her face.
