But in the end, Anathea turned her face away and calmly said, “Gregory, there’s too much between us. You can’t just say ‘let’s start over‘ and expect everything to go back to how it was.”
The truth was, she had wavered. She had once wanted to try again with him.
Even though he had hurt her over and over, and her feelings for him had nearly faded, she still wavered when he said he would help her find them again.
Unfortunately, even if they had both come so close to meeting in the middle, the final steps remained an unbridgeable gap between them.
First, there was the Sinclair family. They were deeply tangled in schemes and as ruthless as starving beasts. The moment they caught even the slightest hint of blood, they would go wild, attacking fiercely and dragging her into an endless abyss of despair.
Second, there was her father, Adam. The Castenea Bridge incident had always been riddled with suspicion. Anathea had found gaps in the so–called evidence, but she still couldn’t fully prove that Adam was innocent.
His signature had been on the final inspection documents. She had seen it herself. There was no doubt it was his handwriting.
Now that Adam remained unconscious, there was no way to dig any deeper.
Because of this, there was always an unbridgeable gap between her and Gregory. Not only that, she was also trapped in the shadow of her father’s death, unable to escape.
She didn’t want to get caught up again in the Sinclair family’s dark schemes. Besides, Adam was a wound Gregory could never fully heal.
Even after coming so far toward each other, they still couldn’t take that last, crucial step.
If they couldn’t force it, maybe it was better to let go.
Gregory could feel her resolve, and it made his chest ache so badly that it felt hard to breathe.
Anathea didn’t notice the change in him. Everything that needed to be said had already been said. She reached out and tried to push him away.
But the next moment, Gregory’s tall frame suddenly swayed, and his weight slumped against her.
Anathea didn’t react in time. She stumbled and fell back onto the bed.
She recalled how domineering Gregory used to be. No matter how much she resisted, he never took no for an answer. She frowned and said with a hint of displeasure, “What are you-

Before she could finish, her words caught in her throat when she saw Gregory’s face suddenly turn pale.
“Gregory, what’s wrong?” Anathea asked anxiously, watching his labored breathing.
She quickly dialed Louie and explained the situation.
“What?” Louie cried out. “Please check his coat pocket immediately. If there’s any medicine inside, give it to him at once.”
“Medicine?”
Anathea was confused. In her memory, Gregory had always been in perfect health. They had only been apart for a short while. How could he suddenly be like this?
But when she saw Gregory’s breathing grow heavier and his complexion worsen, she quickly stepped barefoot on the floor, reached into his coat pocket, and took out a small bottle of pills. Following the instructions, she poured two out.
“Gregory, open your mouth,” she urged.

Her tone held an urgency even she hadn’t realized. She brought him a glass of water and gently placed the pills in his mouth.
Gregory swallowed with great effort but immediately started coughing violently.
Anathea quickly patted his back, trying to ease his breathing.
After a while, his breathing began to steady. He lay back on the bed, drained and weak, barely managing to draw in air.
“Thank you, Annie,” he said, looking up at her. His long lashes were still wet from the tears brought on by the coughing fit, and his flushed nose gave him a strangely delicate, almost pitiable look
Anathea pursed her lips and asked stiffly, “You’re sick?”
Gregory gave a soft grunt. “It’s just a minor illness. Nothing serious.”
However, the way he brushed it off only made her more suspicious.
“When did it start?” she pressed.
Gregory didn’t answer. Instead, he changed the subject. “It’s getting late. You should get some rest.”
Since he clearly didn’t want to talk about it, Anathea didn’t push. “Alright. Then get some rest.”
Just as she was about to get up, Gregory reached out and grabbed her wrist.
“Just one night, Annie,” he said, looking at her with pleading eyes. “You don’t want Grandma finding out we’re sleeping separately and coming up with another excuse to throw us together again, do you?”
