Eleanor’s expression turned cold in an instant. She could already anticipate what Théo was about to say.
“Aunt Eleanor, you know very well that I like Anathea,” Theo said with a strained voice. “It took all my effort to persuade her to leave with me. I promised to protect her, and she has only just begun to trust me again. Yet, you went behind my back and instructed Rory to send people to harm her.”
His eyes reddened with emotion.
“Anathea has done absolutely nothing wrong. She has no quarrel with you. Why are you so determined to make her life miserable?”
Eleanor was momentarily stunned. A cold and obscure emotion flickered in her eyes.
How could he possibly claim that Anathea had done nothing wrong?
She couldn’t help but remember that day at St. Sophia’s Cathedral.
She had finally managed to arrange a visit under the pretense of attending service with Gregory, just to see the son she had longed to meet.
She reached out to hold him, only to feel a piercing gaze from above. A young girl on the second floor stared at her unblinkingly, as if able to expose every secret she had kept hidden.
Just as her son was about to call her “Mom,” she withdrew her arms and slapped him sharply.
“Who is your mother? Do not call me that,” she said coldly.
The moment she slapped him, regret hit her instantly. Her son’s eyes filled with tears, wide with disbelief and pain.
She wanted to explain herself, but before she could say a word, he shouted, “I hate you!” and ran off. In his panic, he slipped and fell into the lake.
She frantically directed the rescue team to save her son, but what she hadn’t expected was that Gregory had also fallen into the lake at the same time. When the rescuers heard her calling for her son and pulled out a boy who wasn’t Gregory, they all turned to her in confusion.
At that moment, a cold dread washed over her, as if her long–buried secret had just been uncovered.
And worst of all, that girl had seen everything. Ironically, she was also the one who saved Gregory. If she hadn’t, and Gregory had died that day, Lennox would never have forgiven her. She would’ve lost everything, including her position as Mrs. Sinclair. She stared coldly at the girl, who had collapsed from exhaustion after saving Gregory. There was no trace of gratitude in her eyes. Once everyone had left, she grabbed the girl by the throat and shoved her into the water.
She didn’t care that the girl had helped her. If it hadn’t been for her, she wouldn’t have grown apart from her son. He wouldn’t have run off and nearly drowned, and her secret wouldn’t have come so close to being exposed
Just as she was about to silence that girl for good, a nun called out, ‘Ms. Jacobson!”
Afraid of being caught, Eleanor reluctantly let go of her. But before leaving, she leaned in and delivered a chilling threat. “If you dare speak a word about what happened today, I’ll make sure you never resurface.”
The young girl had been so frightened by Eleanor’s threat that she couldn’t utter a single word.
“Did you hear me?” Eleanor hissed, glaring at her until she gave a frightened nod.
Only then did she finally let her go.
That memory had stayed buried deep in Eleanor’s mind for years, but every time it surfaced, she was filled with regret for not finishing the job.

If it hadn’t been for that girl, her son wouldn’t hate her now. Even now, he refused to speak kindly to her or spare her a soft look.
When Adam later brought that girl to the Sinclair family to pressure Lennox for marriage, Eleanor finally realized it was
Anathea.
In other words, Anathea not only ruined her relationship with her son but was also threatening her daughter’s future.
Despite all that, Theo still had the audacity to say Anathea had done nothing wrong. What a joke.
Eleanor took a deep breath. Her eyes were clouded with bitterness and hatred, but when she faced Theo again, she calmed herself and said, “Theo, I am doing all of this for your own good. Adam killed your closest friend. If you hadn’t been lucky that day, you might have died too. So, how can you possibly fall in love with his daughter?”
