He cut both Gregory and Theo a warning look before grumbling, “‘s bad enough I have to work overtime, and now I have to deal with a pair of idiots.”
Gregory and Theo finally took their defiant gazes off each other, refusing to make eye contact again.
Theo was the first to walk away, brushing past Gregory and hurrying off in the same direction as Anathea. He wouldn’t be second again! He would be the first to reach her this time!
Gregory watched as Theo took off like a wild hare. The corner of his mouth twitched as he scoffed in contempt. “How immature.
He highly doubted Anathea would fall for someone like Theo.
“Anathea’s had to put up with an iceberg for a husband for a long time,” Louie pointed out, as if reading Gregory’s mind. He teased, “She might prefer the company of a warm, pleasant man like Theo. Who knows?”
“No way.” Gregory sounded certain, but he clenched his fists so hard that his knuckles popped.
Louie’s eyes glittered with yet more amusement as he noted the sullen look on Gregory’s face.
Theo was already out of breath by the time he caught up with Anathea, but he didn’t stop in his tracks. He walked over to her and took the seat beside her.
She was holding the cup of latte with both hands and sipping gingerly. She’d also opened the packaging of the sandwich he got her and was slowly munching on it.
Perhaps exhaustion got the better of her, for her chewing was slow, and her lids were half–closed. She looked like she might fall asleep any second. The cup of latte in her hand was slowly tipping to the side.
Theo immediately reached over and took the latte. “Careful.”
Anathea snapped to her senses, as if waking from a dream. She forced a smile. “Thanks.”
“Go get some sleep if you’re tired. I can keep watch here. I promise I’ll come get you if your father wakes up,” Theo offered.
Anathea shook her head. “It’s alright.”
She wanted to stay as close to Adam as possible so that she could be here when he woke up.
That aside, she was also worried for Adam’s safety, given how people had pursued them after he was released from prison and attempted to kill him. She didn’t want any more accidents to happen.
But even so, she cast a furtive look at the bodyguards in hiding. They’d secretly surrounded the hospital, and she had caught sight of them a while ago. These bodyguards were stationed here to protect her and Adam, and she saw a few familiar faces among them.
She didn’t have to guess to know who was behind this security detail.
Lowering her gaze, Anathea felt a rush of inexplicable emotions course through her.
The whole night of waiting paid off for Anathea–when dawn broke and the first light filtered through the windows, Adam finally regained consciousness.
Overcome with emotion, Anathea pressed herself against the glass her eyes full of desperation.

But Adam was still weak from having been critically ill and could only stay awake for a couple of minutes be his eyes again. He fell back into a deep slumber.

Adam didn’t wake again until the afternoon, and this time, he was able to keep his eyes open for longer. He took… is surroundings curiously.
Having gotten permission from the doctor, Anathea hurried into Adam’s room and stopped by his bedside. She tried to keep her emotions in check as she called out to him softly, “Dad?”
Adam stared at her, his murky eyes lighting up enough for Anathes to see her face in them. He parted his lips, his voice coming out as rough as sandpaper.
But Anathea gripped his hand anyway and waited patiently for him to speak. She was in no rush to hear him talk. It was more than enough to see him awake.
Alas, Adam’s gaze was inquisitive as he looked at Anathea. “Who are you?”
Anathea froze, and her heart, which had been on the verge of singing mere seconds ago, suddenly sank.
“Dad, it’s ine, Nat,” she said a little frantically, anxious to try and rouse Adam’s memories.
However, he only stared at her with puzzlement, assessing her as
she were a stranger to him.
She asked the doctors, “What’s going on?”
“Don’t worry, Ms. Jacobson. Please let us examine Mr. Jacobson thoroughly.”
Anathea was shown out of the room, where she could do nothing but watch Adam face the doctors and their questions. Regardless of what they asked, he only shook his head in response, indicating he didn’t know the answers.
