Hannah said coldly, “Grandpa, Grandma, if you want to die, go ahead and jump. In the best–case scenario, you’ll smash your legs and arms and spend the rest of your miserable lives rotting in hospital bed.
“I’d love to see how long your son sticks around once you’ve got no money left to bleed. Let’s see if he takes care of you or if he bleeds you dry until you can’t even afford a damn coffin.”
Sebastian and Isla flinched and exchanged a glance. The scenario annah described sent a chill straight down their spines.
Because deep down, they knew what kind of person Leon was. If things really spiraled like Hannah said, they would be better off dead.
But the truth was, they didn’t want to die.
So the next second, they yanked the ropes off themselves and shouted at Leon, “That’s enough! That brat doesn’t give a damn about us. Even if we die right in front of her, she’s not going to budge.”
“Dad, what-” Leon’s face twisted with disbelief.
“We’re too old for this crap. Whatever grudge you have with her, settle it yourself. Leave us out of it!”
Isla tossed the rope to the ground and stepped back from the rooftop edge.
“Mom! Seriously? You too?” Leon stomped his foot. “Didn’t we agree I’d untie you after we got the money? How could you untie yourselves?”
“You’re still talking about getting the money? Oh, please! That damn brat doesn’t even care whether we live or die. If we actually fell by accident, that would be a real disaster!”
Sebastian spat on the ground. His voice was loud and full of vigor. He seemed nothing like the heart attack victim clinging to life
just moments ago.
A thoughtful glint flickered in Anathea’s eyes.
So Sebastian and Isla had been in on it from the start. This whole hostage stunt was just a cheap act to extort Hannah.
And now that Hannah wasn’t falling for it, they didn’t even bother pretending anymore.
Hannah watched as they dropped the act like it meant nothing. Even though she’d long suspected it, she still couldn’t stop the wave of bitterness that rose in her chest.
Because this same routine had played out over and over ever since she’d started working and had a bit of money.
And she kept giving in because some part of her held onto the past, and she didn’t want to be utterly alone in the world.
Hannah thought that maybe this was just her life and it would go on like this forever. That was until Chloe came along.
It wasn’t until she had her own child–her own family–that she finally found the strength to let go of the part of her life that had festered like an open wound–inflamed, rotting, and reeking.
But even now, they wouldn’t let go. Their tactics had only gotten more aggressive. They were determined to force her into submission.
But Hannah was done. “I’m not paying for your pathetic lives anymore.”
“How dare you?” Leon roared, pointing at her. “If you walk away right now, don’t blame me for what I do next!”
“Try me,” Hannah shot back.
With her mind made up to cut all ties, she was no longer bound by anything. She shot Leon a cold glance, then grabbed the bag of money and took Anathea by the hand. “Thea, let’s go.”

Anothea saw the determination in her eyes and nodded. “Yeah, lets go.”
She knew that Bannah had made up her mind. From this moment on, there would be no ties left between Hannah and the Cole family, and certainly not a single cent more going their way.
Anathea picked up the second bag and tuned to leave with her.
But in the very next second, Leon’s voice rang out again, echoing across the rooftop like a demon crawling out of hell. “Hannah, if you dare walk away now, I’ll kill your daughter!“.
