Louie froze. A subtle shift flickered in his eyes behind the lenses as he looked at Giselle with suspicion.
Something long dormant inside him suddenly rippled at her words
“If your arm is injured, it might affect Gabriel’s surgery,” Giselle calmly said.
At that, whatever hint of softness had risen in Louie’s eyes vanished. He let out a dry, bitter laugh. “Right. Without me, how could you possibly save Gabriel? So my arm still holds some value to you.”
So that was it. Giselle had only shown care because she wanted something from him.
“So if I weren’t Gabriel’s surgeon, you wouldn’t have offered me aside, wouldn’t have brought me ice, and probably wouldn’t even bother saying hi if we passed on the street, would you, Ms. Chamberlain?” Louie asked with a scoff.
But for some reason, deep down, a part of him still hoping she would deny it.
Even if they were broken up now, they had been together for four years. Surely, that counted for something–enough for a simple hi, at least.
But Giselle said nothing. Her silence was her answer.
A heavy pressure settled in Louie’s chest, making him feel suffocated. Gripping her wrist tightly, he demanded, “Giselle, was there ever a moment when you truly cared about me?”
She froze because his eyes looked SO heartbreakingly lost.
Behind those cold frames, the corners of his eyes were tinged red. His round eyes looked misty, as if covered in a delicate haze. It gave him the look of a pet that had just been abandoned by its owner.
Giselle parted her lips. In the end, under the weight of his expectant gaze, she replied casually, “Don’t worry, Dr. Anderson. If you can cure Gabriel, I’ll make sure you’re properly compensated.
The light in Louie’s eyes faded, as if confirming what he’d expected all along.
Of course she never cared.
He had no idea what had possessed him back then. He was popular enough, and plenty of people had pursued him. And yet, he just had to fall for a woman so cold and proud.
But Giselle hadn’t always been like this. At least not in his memories.
She’d changed so much. It felt like she’d become a stranger he could no longer understand overnight. Gone was the Giselle who used to be proud but full of warmth.
If she could be this heartless, then why should he hold onto any sentiment?
Louie let out a breath. He shoved the swirl of emotions that had slipped out a second ago all right back where they came from. When he looked at her again, his gaze turned cold.
“I don’t need anything from you. Your so–called compensation doesn’t mean a thing to me. But I don’t do anything for free anymore. That’s the lesson you taught me.”
Now, he was just handing it back.
“So what do you want?” Giselle frowned. Something in her gut twisted with unease.
“You,” Louie said without blinking.
“Me?”
Giselle paused, surprised that this was all he asked for. Still, it wasn’t far from what she’d expected. It was just a matter of who

Louie pressed, “So? Are you in or not?”
“Sure,” she said with a nod, agreeing without a trace of hesitation Then added, “Right now?”
Before Louie could respond, Giselle slammed the car door shut and started unbuttoning her shirt.
“What are you doing?” he asked, clearly confused.
“You said you wanted me, didn’t you? Don’t act all shy now.” As Giselle unbuttoned her shirt, she reached for his belt.
But he quickly grabbed her hand and stopped her. “Wait!”

Giselle frowned. “Louie, I don’t have time for this coy back–and–forth crap. If you wanna do it, let’s do it. What’s with the stalling? Are you even a man?”
As she said that, she lifted her leg, about to straddle him.
“Giselle!” Louie’s voice rose sharply, frustration clear in his tone. Is this all you ever think about?”
This wasn’t it?
Giselle froze, her brows knitting tighter. “Then what did you mean?”
Louie let out a deep breath. “My housekeeper took the week off to visit family. I need someone to cover for her.”
“You want me to be your housekeeper?” Giselle stared at him like she’d just heard the funniest joke. “The cooking and cleaning kind?”
