Gregory took advantage of the brief moment when Anathea’s anger subsided to explain everything, including how he’d discovered that her car accident years ago was tied to the Watson tintly and how Roy had ties to them as well.
That was why he’d zeroed in on Roy.
Martin, watching his usually aloof boss anxiously trying to explain himself, couldn’t help thinking that Louie would probably tear up if he were here.
Because Gregory was finally explaining himself. It was practically once–in–a–lifetime event.
“I never meant to look into you. I was just digging into what happened back then,” Gregory said honestly.
“But you’re the one who put my dad behind bars.” Anathea watched him with a hint of scrutiny in her eyes. “So why are you suddenly investigating the case now?”
Why was he reopening the case when he already had an answer? Did it mean he’d been wrong back then? Or had he done it on purpose all along? Even without solid proof of Adam’s guilt, had he still used his power to send Adam to prison, just to satisfy his need for revenge on behalf of a friend?
Suddenly, Anathea didn’t want to know the answer anymore. Because if it really was true, she knew she would end up hating
him.
She couldn’t believe that she didn’t want to hear him admit it.
Her fingers clenched tightly, trembling slightly. She was scared.
“Because it’s the one thing you’ve been holding onto all this time and the one thing that’s always stood between us.” Gregory let out a long breath.
“I can show you every file and every piece of evidence from back then. Nothing about that conviction was personal. The evidence was solid. The only reason Ms. Chamberlain even won the appeal was because she found a minor procedural loophole.”
In truth, Adam had never been fully cleared.
The only reason he was out of prison now was because Gregory had relented.
He didn’t want to see Anathea constantly worrying about Adam, running herself ragged and weighed down by sorrow. So he’d chosen to let Adam go.
Just as he once wished before the divine statue, all he wanted was to stay by Anathea’s side. And if that meant shouldering his friend’s grudges alone, so be it.
Even if he had to pay for it in the afterlife, rotting in hell for eternity, he wouldn’t regret his decisions now.
Anathea stayed silent. Even though Gregory hadn’t spelled it out, she could still hear the meaning behind his words.
A quiet war raged inside her.
But Gregory hadn’t come all this way just to let her waver.
“If you believe he was wronged and you’re determined to find the truth, then I’ll help you.”
He looked straight at her and spoke each word heavy with conviction.
Gregory had thought long and hard about this. If he didn’t fight for her, someone else would win her heart. And no matter how many times he got punched in the ring, it wouldn’t change a thing.
So why not fight?
If Anathea wouldn’t take the first step, then he would.
