Chapter 597
The oxygen was running out slowly.
As the air grew thinner, Anathea’s eyes fluttered open. The sight of blood in front of her made her heart skip.
“Gregory!”
Her voice was hoarse and trembling with fear.
Gregory had thrown himself forward to shield her again. His back was slammed against the windshield. A stream of bright red blood was spilling out.
His eyes were closed, and his breathing was faint.
Anathea’s eyes burned. She choked out, “Gregory, don’t scare me. Wake up. Please wake up…”
Tears spilled over uncontrollably and landed on his face.
His lashes twitched. Slowly, he opened his eyes. When he saw Anathea’s tear–streaked face, he forced a weak smile. “Annie, don’t cry. I’m fine…”
“You’re still trying to act tough?” Her voice was thick with tears.
“Really, I’m fine.”
Gregory clenched his jaw and reached out to lower her seat. With Anathea leaning back, there was more space for Gregory to move. Carefully, he tried to move off from the shattered glass.
But even the smallest movement made the car creak. They could hear the dirt above them groaning and pressing down, as if it was desperate to break through and bury them completely.
Gregory braced himself over Anathea but didn’t dare to let his weight fall on her. His voice was raw as he said, “Call Martin.”
Anathea fumbled for her phone. Luckily, it had stayed in her pocket. And thank God there was still a signal.
After picking up, Martin quickly confirmed their location and arranged for rescue, urging them to stay calm.
Stay calm? How could she?
Anathea’s eyes turned red–rimmed. “Please hurry. He’s hurt!”
Martin was stunned for a second. “Okay, we’ll be there soon.”
When Anathea hung up, she noticed Gregory had been watching her the whole time.
“What? Are you in pain? Where does it hurt?” she asked quickly.
Gregory shook his head. The corners of his pale lips curled into a slight smile. “Annie, you look like a kitten when you cry. It’s
kind of cute.”
“You’re still saying things like that at a time like this?” Anathea snapped.
But the next second, Gregory broke into a harsh cough he could no longer suppress. His body gave out as he collapsed downward.
“Gregory!” Anathea shouted.
But he still held himself up against the seat, fighting to stay upright so he wouldn’t collapse onto her.
“I’m okay,” he whispered.
“You’re not! Stop lying!” Anathea’s tears fell even faster.
“Annie, don’t cry.” Gregory reached out to wipe her tears but didn’t have the strength. He slumped forward, resting against he

Their bodies pressed together through the fabric. Anathea tensed for a moment.
“Sorry…” Gregory tried to sit up, but before he could, Anathea reached out and held him tightly.
“Don’t move. Just stay like this. It’s okay.”
She felt the dampness on his back. It was his blood. Her chest tightened at once.
He was pretending to be strong, just so she wouldn’t panic. A bitter ache spread through her chest. Anathea held him tighter.
In the cramped space, the two of them were pressed tightly together. As the air thinned, waves of dizziness from the lack of oxygen kept crashing over them.
A sudden wave of dread washed over Anathea. What if they didn’t make it out this time?
Especially when she saw Gregory’s eyes starting to lose focus, her heart skipped a beat. Her voice came out hoarse and trembling. “Gregory, don’t fall asleep! Stay with me!”
“But I’m so tired…” His voice was fading. “I’m sorry, Annie. I don’t think I can keep chasing you anymore…”
“Don’t say that!” Her voice broke. “You better hang on! Do you hear me? If you give up now, I’ll never forgive you!” Gregory reached up, barely brushing away her tears. His breath was shallow as he asked, “Annie, if we make it out of here, will you give me one more chance?”
As Anathea stared at him, all the emotions she’d buried and run from came rushing up like a crashing wave.
She gripped his hand. “If we get out of this alive, I’ll agree to whatever you ask.”
“Really?”
“Yes.” Anathea nodded.
“Pinky swear…” Gregory hooked his pinky around hers. A satisfied smile tugged at his lips. “Now you can’t go back on it….”
His voice grew fainter and fainter until his eyes finally slipped shut
Anathea’s breath hitched. “Gregory… Gregory? Gregory!”
