Chapter 1
Chapter 1
The year I hated my father Everett Brooks most, he tried to make amends by delivering his best friend Theo Maddox to my bed.
After that one night, I completely fell for him.
Three months later, I forgave my dad.
Four months later, I was pregnant.
From that moment on, I became New York’s most precious pregnant woman.
At every prenatal checkup, New York’s richest guy and the second richest would both stood guard at the hospital.
Everyone said my husband and father spoiled me like a princess.
But on the day of my detailed anatomy scan, they both didn’t show up.
“There’s an important project,” my dad gently stroke my hair.
Theo caressed my pregnant belly softly. “Once this deal wraps up, I’ll bring back something special for you and our little one.”
I smiled as I watched them leave, only to receive an anonymous video right before the check–up.
My father stood there in a groom’s tuxedo, beside Brielle Kensington–the same mistress who broke my Mom’s heart so bad it finally killed her.
And their bastard daughter Emily? She’s pregnant and in a flowing wedding dress, arm–in–arm with my husband Theo.
“Double blessings!”
Someone raised a glass in the video. “Congratulations to Mr. Brooks finally got his girl back, and congratulations to Mr. Maddox for marrying his soulmate!”
At the end of the video, my father’s casual and cold voice drifted through:
“You know damn well that you and Amelia’s marriage is fake, so the child is bound to be illegitimate.”
Theo chuckled in response:
“Amelia has everything she could want. But Emily’s been illegitimate her whole life–I can’t let her kid go through that shit again.”
I bit my lip hard as I left the hospital, but my phone kept buzzing with notifications.
A vasectomy form. And one line of text:
“Say yes, and the child in your womb will be my one and only heir forever.”
I stumbled out of the hospital and just wandering in the street. No clue where I was going.
The LED screen on the mall was playing our family interview three months ago–right after I found out I was pregnant.
My dad stood in front of the cameras, holding up that blue diamond he’d bought at auction.
“This ‘Heart of the Ocean‘ is for my future granddaughter. It’s not about the price–it’s about legacy.”
Theo was right next to me,
gently holding my hand.
“Honestly, Amelia’s the one who’s been through the most. I’ll spend my whole life taking care of my girls.”

Chapter 1
The camera froze on us smiling at each other.
The headline at the bottom read: “New York’s Happiest Family.”
Rain mixed with my tears, blurring everything.
Then my phone buzzed. It’s Theo.
I used to pick up his calls before the first ring even finished.
But now… I just stared at the screen.
Finally answered right before it went to voicemail.
Theo’s buddies teasing came from the other end of the phone:
“Man, Theo finally got what he wanted. When Emily left for Europe, he turned this whole fucking city upside down looking for her. Now he’s been playing house with that spoiled bitch for two years just to get the Brooks company back for Emily.”
“Shit, Theo’s still got it though! You should’ve seen her last time–that Brooks girl was practically melting when he kissed her. Legs turned to jelly, hanging all over him. No wonder they skipped the wedding and went straight to knocking her up!”
“She always talked shit about bastard kids too. Karma’s a bitch–now her own kid’s gonna be illegitimate!”
“But today was fucking perfect! Emily throws one little tantrum like ‘If mommy doesn’t get married, neither do I,‘ and boom–Theo talks her dad into marrying Brielle. Mother and daughter both scoring rich husbands on the same day! Has New York ever seen shit like this?”
My fingers clenched around the phone. Tears streaming down my face.
Then Theo’s voice cut through in ice cold.
“Who the fuck touched my phone?”
Dead silence. Then his voice softened.
“Baby? You there? Why aren’t you saying anything? You okay?”
