Chapter 5
“Her legs haven’t recovered–how could she possibly get to the edge of a cliff? Are you all blind? Useless!”
Jasper’s face darkened, his eyes like ice. “Who actually saw this? Say one more false word and I’ll fire the lot of you!‘
He rarely showed anger. Not only were the servants stunned, but even Mr. and Mrs. Thornwood were shocked.
“Why are you standing there like idiots? Find her! Alive or dead, I want her found!”
With those words, he collapsed against the ancestral tablet table, as if all strength had left his body.
Vanessa seemed not to notice his pain. “Jasper, Carson’s auspicious time is approaching. Can we complete the ceremony first?”
Hearing this, Jasper slowly raised his eyes, his voice tinged with rebuke, “With Vivienne’s life hanging in the balance, how can I focus on anything else?”
“But Carson is your flesh and blood.”
Jasper looked at Carson, who had abandoned his usual well–mannered demeanor to cower behind Vanessa, looking
at him with fear.
Jasper gave a slight, cold laugh as a new storm brewed in his expression.
‘Let me tell you this: Vivienne is Carson’s mother in name and will be his only mother in the future! If she’s truly lead, the Thornwood family will enter mourning, and Carson must observe three years of filial mourning for her!”
Vanessa was shocked. “On what grounds? Jasper, you’re being irrational!”
Juring their argument, the assistant suddenly appeared holding a dirty women’s handbag–mine.
‘Sir, we found Madam’s bag at the cliff edge. Inside was this.”
asper took it and looked.
It was full of photos of Carson.
Photos that only Vanessa could have obtained.
After a long silence, Jasper suddenly threw the photos into the air, his face ashen. “You sent these to her, didn’t you?”
‘You told her the child is ours, didn’t you?”
Jasper gripped Vanessa’s shoulders so hard it seemed he might crush her bones!

Carson cried uncontrollably, and even the Thornwood elders couldn’t bring themselves to intervene.
Jasper warned her viciously, having lost all reason: “Vanessa Quinn, if anything happens to Vivienne, I won’t let you off!”
Hearing this, Vanessa burst into tears:
“How could I possibly tell Vivienne? Am I insane? If she knew the truth, how could Carson ever be accepted into the family?”
“Vivienne must have grown suspicious and investigated Carson herself!”
“Jasper, you have to believe me.”
Seeing Jasper turn away coldly, Vanessa spoke without thinking.
“That crazy woman! She just can’t stand to see our Carson happy! She can’t have children herself, so she doesn’t want anyone else’s child to prosper!”
These words triggered Jasper’s fury again.
“Say that again?!”
Jasper’s face was ominously dark, no longer resembling his usually refined self.
“Vanessa Quinn, I’ve spared you because you’re Carson’s mother, but I’m warning you–this is the Thornwood estate, and she is Mrs. Thornwood. Don’t overstep your boundaries!”
Carson was terrified and immediately hugged Jasper’s leg, pleading.
“Dad! Please don’t hit Mom!”
“I’ll be good to that crippled woman, I promise!”
Vanessa quickly covered Carson’s mouth.
Jasper looked as though he’d had a sudden revelation and mockingly said, “You taught him that too?”
Seeing this, Vanessa trembled and fell to her knees.
“Don’t hit Carson! It’s my fault!”
Mrs. Thornwood couldn’t bear to watch. “Oh my, what’s happening?”
“Jasper, are you really going to beat your son to death over that ungrateful Vivienne?”
But Jasper only responded coldly: “The Thornwood heir can be established or removed at will.”

“Vanessa, the Quinns have been good to me, and I promised your parents I would make Carson a bridge between
our families.”
“But if he doesn’t respect Vivienne, I can break that promise just as easily!”
With that, everyone present was shocked.
Jasper left the ancestral hall without another word.
Just outside the door, he ran into his aunt, Margot Thornwood.
“If you knew this would happen, why did you do it?”
“Jasper, I warned you long ago that Vanessa wasn’t the innocent type!”
“Poor Vivienne!” Margot looked skyward, her eyes full of pity. “Even in death, she never knew it was her beloved
husband who ruined her!”
‘And even if she’s still alive, what then? She’s paralyzed, disabled, likely unable to bear children for the rest of her
life.”
