“You know,” Jace whispered, his voice steady in the darkness, “I never thought I’d have a moment like this.”
I looked up at his thoughtful face. His eyes held a softness I’d never seen before.
“What kind of moment?” I asked, curious despite my sleepiness.
His fingers gently caressed my shoulder as he gathered his thoughts. “This. Peaceful. Complete.” He paused. “Before, I always felt like something was missing. Like I was chasing something I couldn’t see.”
His confession warmed my heart. I reached up to touch his cheek.
“And now?” I asked softly.
“Now,” he took a deep breath, “I’m not searching anymore.”
I smiled and moved closer, my fingers slowly tracing the muscles of his chest. His skin tensed under my touch. I could feel his breathing change, see the familiar fire ignite in his eyes. When my fingertips slid across his stomach, he grabbed my wrist – firm yet gentle, controlled but wanting.
“Saturday,” I said softly, looking into his eyes, “my place will be empty.”
Jace’s gaze deepened. That day was the Blood Moon. He slowly licked his lips, making my stomach tighten. “Are you sure?” His voice was lower than usual, slightly raspy.
