Chapter 10
They knew better than to mess with families like mine or the Lanes. So, they turned all ther anger on Micah,
After all, in their eyes, the whole thing went down because of his wedding. They were only trying to help him and Lana when they jumped me… so now they blamed him for everything
So, they ganged up and demanded Micah pay them back.
But Micah was already broke and that just made them angrier. They started shoving him, things got ugly and they ended up beating the crap out of him.
That was the final nail in his coffin.
He tried finding work, but every door slammed in his face. Even after changing his name, people still recognized him–and fired him on the spot.
Eventually, he ended up homeless, digging through trash to survive.
As for Lana?
She divorced him and vanished. Never showed her face again.
But she left her son behind–Micah’s mom ended up raising him.
At first, she adored her grandson. But over time, she realized he was a nightmare. A real monster of a kid. And by then, it was too late to get rid of him.
The two of them fought constantly–shouting matches, even physical fights. Micah’s mom passed out a few times from the stress.
One night, while Micah was digging through a dumpster, he saw a luxury car pull up. A woman stepped out, all dolled up like she walked out of a magazine.
It was Lana,
She’d become some rich guy’s mistress.
Micah lost it. His eyes turned bloodshot as he screamed, “You did this to me! This is all your fault!”
He lunged at her like a madman, grabbed her head and slammed it against the pavement–again and again–until she stopped breathing.
Micah was arrested on the spot and later sentenced to death for first–degree murder.
And just like that, the once–proud Langston Family crumbled. Only Micah’s mother was left, stuck raising a kid who wasn’t even her own.
One day, the boy threw a tantrum because he wanted a phone. He and Micah’s mom got into a nasty fight.
Then he grabbed a kitchen knife–and stabbed her.
She nearly bled out in her apartment. Luckily, she managed to call 911 in time. When the police ran a DNA test on the boy as part of the investigation, that’s when the truth came out–he wasn’t Micah’s son.
That broke Micah’s mother completely.
She started to lose touch with reality, sitting alone in her cramped little apartment, muttering to

herself over and over, “It would’ve been great if we’d chosen Riley. It would’ve been great…”
The boy later escaped from juvenile detention, snuck back into the apartment to steal money for a new phone.
He and the old woman got into another fight.
Somehow, during the struggle, a fire broke out.
The place went up in flames, killing them both–and taking every last trace of the Langston Family down with it.

I clicked off the TV after watching the news about the fire.
Micah Langston, that name felt like it belonged to someone from another lifetime.
It had only been a few months passed since, but it felt like ages ago.
I gently rested my hand on my baby bump and called out, “Babe, are you ready yet? We gotta head out for my prenatal checkup!”
