In the afternoon, Aria hesitated for a long time outside The Ashworth Pack edge before finally entering.
Her mother, Helen Ashworth, saw her and greeted her with a smile. “Aria, you’re back.”
She looked out the door again, her expression hopeful.
There was a hint of disappointment on her face when she realized Aria was alone.
Aria had noticed early on and simply said, “There’s no need to look, only I have returned.”
Upon hearing this, Helen’s smile froze slightly, her scent carrying worry.
Gabriel came downstairs at this time, his Alpha presence immediately making the room tense. When he didn’t see Kane, his face showed clear displeasure. “Didn’t I ask you to call Alpha Kane over?”
“He was busy.”
“What do you mean busy? That’s your mate! Which bonded pair doesn’t argue during the day and make up at night? You don’t even have the ability to ask your mate to come back and have a meal. Are you useless or not!”
Aria felt a chill in her heart. No one could understand her position, even family members treated her this way.
He didn’t even ask for the reason, he just started to scold her. Nothing had changed in these six years.
She remembered when she got bonded to Kane, her parents were especially happy.
Although the Ashworth Pack was not as powerful and wealthy as the Ravencrest pack, they were still well–off compared to average packs. She used to think that her parents were genuinely hoping for her happiness.
After the bonding, her parents started pressuring her to ask Kane for money and protection in her capacity as Luna. Initially, it was just money to buy a bigger house and car for her younger brother, but later on, it was to cover the losses her father incurred in business, pack war and asked Kane to fill the gap.
In her parents‘ eyes, their son was more important.
And she was just a way to attach themselves to a powerful pack’s resources.
“I’m really sorry about that,” Aria came to her senses, her voice steady despite her wolf’s distress. “I asked him to sever our bond.”
Upon hearing the word “sever,” Gabriel’s face turned pale.
SLAP!
He struck her across the face.
