“Uncle Gideon’s marriage?” Only then did Maurice recognize Gideon. “I–Is that you, Uncle Gideon?”
Maurice’s gaze became a little fearful. He composed himself before mustering the courage to ask, “Haven’t you always been in Morbeck? Why are you back? Are you here to attend Giselle’s and my wedding?”
This was getting out of hand. I wanted to stop him, but Gideon suddenly wrapped an arm around my shoulders and pulled me into his arms. “You and Giselle? You must be confused, Maurice. I’m the one who’s marrying Gigi.”
I blushed from Gideon being so forward. Meanwhile, Maurice flushed in rage and embarrassment. “That’s impossible! H–How can you marry Giselle?”
He looked like he couldn’t believe what he’d just heard. The news seemed to be a huge
shock to him.
His Majesty grew angrier upon seeing him act like that. “Stop this nonsense! Gideon has finally found someone he wants to marry. If you dare to ruin this marriage, I will have your
head!”
Maurice didn’t dare act out of line when he saw that he’d upset His Majesty. Gideon and I thanked His Majesty and turned to leave.
Gideon didn’t have a place of residence in the capital, so he would temporarily stay in the chambers he’d occupied in the palace. He and I headed there to spend some time together.
I had dinner in his chambers in the evening, after which he took me back to my home. He
walked me to the door and stopped there, looking inside. I could tell he wanted to go in, but he said, “Well, this is where we say goodbye.”
“I’ll invite you over for a meal tomorrow, Your Highness,” I said.
He seemed pleased to hear that. He smiled and got into his carriage before leaving. As I

watched him leave, a figure appeared beside me and grabbed my hand tightly. “How can you be marrying my uncle, Giselle?”
Even under the moonlight, I could tell that Maurice’s eyes were red–rimmed. I asked coolly, “Why can’t I? Did you think that I, the chancellor’s legitimate daughter, would deign to share my husband with my adoptive sister? Wake up, Maurice. I won’t marry you.”
“I don’t believe that!” He tightened his grip on me.
I wanted to shake him off but found that I couldn’t. I snapped, “Don’t cross the line, Maurice!”

He frowned and forced out, “Tell me whether you’re doing all of this to make me jealous, Gigi. You just want me to leave Cami!”
This was my first time in two lifetimes hearing him address me so intimately, but all it did
was disgust me. Out of the corner of my eye, I seemed to see a dark figure appear on the
roof.
I said, “His Majesty is the one who decreed that Gideon and I are to be married, Maurice. Do you think I would treat this like a joke just to make you jealous?”
Maurice looked at me, his expression complicated. “As long as you turn down this marriage with Uncle Gideon and marry me, I promise I’ll cut off all contact with Cami. I need you,
Gigi.”
“Is that so? I don’t need you, though.”
He paled.
