Chapter 59
Chapter 59
Standing outside the ward, Ellana pressed her lips together, a trace of unease flickering across her face nt she overheard the conversation inside,
A second later, she adjusted her expression and knocked gently on the door, drawing the attention of the woman within.
“Hey, Ellie, you’re here” Bernice Halverson ended the call in a hurry and turned toward Eliana with a warm smile.
“Bemie.” Eliana stepped into the room and immediately leaned into Bernice’s arms, nurling against her like a child seeking comfort
Bernice stroked Eliana’s soft hair and asked gently, “How’s work been lately!”
Eliana lifted her head from Bernice’s shoulder, her eyes shining, “It’s going really well. Oh, good news, I managed to convince my dad to fund the Therapy Center. You can rest easy. The kids won’t lose their home.”
Bernice’s face showed a flicker of shock. “But I just read online that Burke Group is in trouble. H Therapy Center right now?”
How could your father possibly have the money to fund the
Eliana’s p gaze flickered slightly. “You know, most of the online rumors are made up. Don’t believe everything you read”
She then pulled out a bank card and waved it w
it with a grin. “The only thing that counts is money in hand.”
Seeing how confidently she spoke, Bemice couldn’t help but be partly convinced.
Still, in Bernice’s memory, Hudson had never been one for charity. On the contrary, under the influence of his wife, every decision he made was indecisive and erratic.
But Bernice trusted Eliana and knew Eliana wouldn’t lie to her. She thought perhaps Hudson had really given the money, just not a large amount.
Pulling herself from her thoughts, Bernice let out a low sigh. “It’s all my fault. If it weren’t for cancer treatment, the Therapy Center wouldn’t be in such financial strain. Sometimes I wonder if it’d be better to just give up.”
Ellana immediately grew anxious. “Bernie, the Therapy Center was your painstaking effort. Without you, it would lose its soul”
Seeing Bernice’s smile, Ellana pressed on. “Don’t worry. While you’re in the hospital, take care of everything. Once you’re discharged, everything will be right back on track.”
“You’re so sweet, Ellie Bernice reached out and gently cupped Elana’s face, her eyes full of maternal affection. “Please say thanks to your father for
me”
Elana nodded, though deep down, she didn’t dare reveal the truth that she had traded herself to make that deal with Hudson. Nor did she dare confess that she had married Theodore.
if Bernice knew the money came from “selling herself,” she’d rather die than accept it.
Later, at Russell Manor.
Barbara stood in the courtyard, glancing out toward the gate from time to time. The moment Eliana’s figure finally appeared in the distance, Barbara stamped her foot and ran up to her. “So you do remember where home is?”
Noticing the snowflakes gathered on Barbara’s shoulders, Eliana asked in confusion, “You… waited out here for me?”
Her calm tone made Barbara even more furious. “What else was I supposed to do? Do you know Theodore hasn’t eaten a single thing since this morning? You had a good time at your parents’s place and forgot about him, didn’t you?”
ned to rush into the house while snapping. “Didn’t you say Theodore was doing just fine with you?”
Eliana’s heart dropped upon hearing that. She turned to t

Barbara choked on her words. That was indeed what she said–just to save face in front of ana
“I did say that, but I also told you later that the moment you left, he threw a fit. I even told you to come back immediately, and you ignored me; ba yelled back,
Hearing that. Eliana recalled how she dropped her phone in a panic when Isaac suddenly went missing in the play area.
Eliana sighed, “Fine, I’m sorry about that, but if it was that serious, why didn’t you call me again?”“
“Oh, please. You just didn’t want to answer my call. I don’t know what kind of spell you’ve cast on Theodore, but now he’s starving himself because of you,” Barbara snapped.
Barbara was cool and aloof earlier, yet she was now a full–blown firecracker. Even her lovely eyes were practically shooting flares at Eliana.
But Eliana know this was no time to argue. What mattered most was calming down the man who hadn’t eaten all day.
Barbara followed Eliana upstairs but stopped outside Theodore’s room. She threw a frosty warning over her shoulder. “If you can’t calm him down,

you
Seeing the nervous tension in Barbara’s eyes, Eliana deliberately replied just before pushing open the door, “Oh? Why don’t you come in and do it?”
Barbara looked like she wanted to slap Eliana on the spot.
Inside the room, Eliana’s eyes landed on Theodore’s figure. He was seated in a chair and facing the floor–to–ceiling window.
For some reason, a chill swept over her, the same eerie feeling she’d had earlier in the morning while talking to Anthony. She felt as if someone had been watching her from the shadows.
