” Alice asked.
Eliana thought Alice was teasing her and quickly explained, “No, not me. It’s his ex–girlfriend.”
“His… ex–girlfriend?” Alice’s voice trembled almost imperceptibly. “Doesn’t he hate her?”
“Sometimes, even hatred can be a driving force, don’t you think?” Eliana paused and then gently steered the conversation back on track. “Anyway, I was wondering if you’re happy with the venue setup. If there’s anything you’d like to change, feel free to let me know now.”
But Alice seemed distracted. “No, I have no issues. You

The next second, Alice turned to face her directly. “Mrs. Russell, once Anthony and I are engaged, I’ll be moving into Russell Manor. I hope that won’t disrupt your life.”
Eliana thought she was being way too polite. “Of c
not. The more, the merrier.”
After this brief interaction, Alice couldn’t help but notice how young and full of life Eliana was. She used to have that same spark. In fact, she’d devoted her best years to Theodore. And yet now, the one being with him was Eliana.
Just then, a ringtone snapped Alice out of her thoughts. Seeing Anthony’s name on the screen, she quickly said to Eliana, “Sorry, I need to take this call.”
Eliana nodded right away.
Once she’d stepped away, Alice took a deep breath and answered gently, “Hey, Anthony, what’s up?”
Anthony’s voice was cool and distant as he asked, “Alice, why did you go see Eliana behind my back? What are you up to?”
Alice’s expression changed, but she forced herself to stay calm. “Nothing. I just wanted to check out the venue for our engagement.”
Anthony gave a low chuckle. “Oh, really? I thought you still had feelings for my brother and went to stake your claim.”
Alice said hurriedly, “Why would I do that? The one I love now is you.”
“Glad to hear it.” Anthony asked slowly, “You didn’t say anything to Eliana, did you?”
“Of course not.” As she said this, Alice couldn’t help glancing back at Eliana. The moment Eliana noticed, she flashed a bright smile.
A pang of sorrow hit Alice. ‘Eliana is so innocent and pure,’ she thought, ‘How long can she hold out in Anthony’s twisted game? She might not even last as long as I did two years ago.
After work, Eliana remembered that Bernice was getting discharged today, so she grabbed a cab to the hospital.
In the hospital room, after packing up Bernice’s things, Eliana picked up the bags and said cheerfully, “Bernie, we’re good to go.”
On the way home, Bernice suddenly asked in a gentle voice, “Ellie, when did you start dating someone? You’ve been awfully quiet about it.”
Eliana’s heart skipped a beat. She thought, Well, I knew this was coming sooner or later.!
Bernice had always been sharp. When she noticed Eliana avoiding her gaze, she frowned with concern. “Ellie, is there something you’re not telling me?”

Eliana quickly tried to cover it up. “No. You were about to have surgery, and I didn’t want to bother you with it, so I didn’t bring it up.
Bernice nodded, a bit more convinced. “Well, you can tell me
- now, right? What kind of guy is he?”
Before marrying Theodore, all Eliana knew about him was that he was basically a living legend.
After they got married, she initially thought he was just

She realized that some people, no matter how down on their luck, still held real power–he could fix problems with just a few words, problems she
couldn’t solve no matter how much money she spent.
So when Bernice suddenly asked what kind of man he

Hearing this, Bernice looked even more worried. “So, he’s unemployed right now?”
“Uh…” Eliana hesitated, realizing that, technically, that wasn’t wrong, so she nodded. “Yeah, for the time being.”
Bernice looked at her with concern. “Then… are you the one supporting him?”
Eliana rubbed her nose, trying to save Theodore’s reputation. “Not exactly. He’s very well–connected.”
But Bernice thought she was trying to act tough and gently reminded her, “Ellie, you’ve got a lot of good qualities, but when it comes to men, your judgment’s always been a little off. I just don’t want to see you get fooled again.”
Eliana had been deceived by Luke. Back then, she thought Luke was perfect in every way. But once the rose–colored glasses came off, she realized he wasn’t anything special and couldn’t compare to Theodore.
At the very least, when she got sick, Theodore would call a doctor right away and stay up all night to take care of her–even when he was the
needed care.
Luke, on the other hand, wouldn’t lift a finger. He’d even make her run errands and bring him food while she was still sick.

“Theodore, I’m back!” Eliana called as she opened the door to their second–floor room in Russell Manor–only to find Samuel standing in front of Theodore. “Oh hey, Dr. Wilson, you’re here too?”
-Samuel, having finished checking Theodore’s eyes, turned around and smiled at her. “Perfect timing. I was just about to head out.”
“I’ll walk you to the door,” Eliana offered with a nod.
As they reached the front entrance, Samuel suddenly stopped and quietly asked, “M
Russell, have you been feeling nauseous or queasy lately?”
Eliana answered without hesitation, “Not at all.” She’d been eating well and feeling great these days.
Samuel looked a bit disappointed. “Then you’d better hurry up.”
Eliana blinked. “Hurry up with what?”
Samuel reminded her, “Did you forget? Mr. Daniel Russell wants you to give Theodore a baby as soon as possible.”
‘So he was talking about morning sickness,’ Eliana thought.

“He said there’s a generous reward if you manage to give birth to a healthy little heir,” Samuel added.
“I agreed to the marriage, but I never agreed to have a child,” Eliana said firmly. She wasn’t struggling financially anymore, so she wasn’t afraid to spen
her mind.
“Didn’t you say having a baby costs extra?” Samuel asked, looking at her in confusion.
Eliana remembered her slip of the tongue and couldn’t help but feel regretful. “I was just joking.”
Sámuel stared at her for a few seconds before asking, “Not even for 30 million dollars?”
Tempted, Eliana gulped, but she held her ground. “Nope.”
Samuel gave her a mischievous smile. “Alright then. I’ll just let Mr. Daniel Russell know you’re slacking off–quitting halfway. Who knows, maybe he’ll take back most of your reward?”
“Hold on!” Seeing him turn to leave, Eliana panicked and grabbed his

arm. “Dr. Wilson, come on–we can talk about this.”
Cover, she decided to throw Theodore under the bus
“This isn’t just my decision, okay? Tell Theodore to step up, too,” Eliana argued. After thinking it especially since he was even less interested in having kids than she was.
Samuel raised an eyebrow, his tone teasing as he asked, “So you’re saying he’s
impotent?”
Eliana’s mouth twitched. ‘If anything, Theodore was seriously impressive in bed,‘ she thought.
At that moment, Theodore–the very subject of their conversation–stood silently in the room, his eyes fixed coldly on Eliana’s hand still resting on Samuel’s arm. ‘How long are those two planning to stand there, looking so close?‘ he thought bitterly.
Suddenly, he let out a dry cough and said, “Eliana, I’m thirsty. Bring me some water.”
Samuel winked at Eliana and joked, “Don’t forget–Mr. Daniel Russell is dying to have a great–grandchild. If you can’t get Theodore on boa plenty of medicine that can help.”
‘Which doesn’t sound like anything remotely proper,‘ thought Eliana. She closed the door and brought Theodore a glass of water.
Theodore asked in a grave tone, “What were you two whispering about behind my back?”
Figuring he was a victim too, Eliana couldn’t help but complain, “What else? Your grandpa’s still trying to make me have your baby.”
Theodore was stunned for a moment and then wondered, ‘Would our kid look more like me, or more like her?‘
