I thought Liam Harrison had forgotten something.
As soon as I opened the door, Alex Thorne, eyes bloodshot, stormed in and pinned me against the wall.
His bloodshot eyes glared at me, and he gnashed his teeth as he demanded,
“Chloe Davis, how dare you betray me? Why were you hugging Liam Harrison?!”
I froze for a moment, then quickly realized he must have seen what happened with Liam just now.
I shoved Alex away, looking at him coldly.
“You followed me?”
Alex pursed his lips, saying nothing.

He tried to rush forward, but I stopped him.
“Mr. Thorne, please calm down. First, you and I have no relationship anymore, so there’s no ‘betrayal. Second, why I hugged Mr. Harrison is none of your business. And finally, I already told you not to disturb me!”
This time, he didn’t answer, and his face showed no emotion, but that pair of eyes, tinged with a hint of grievance and vulnerability, made me falter for a moment.
He was just like this five years ago.
Back then, I had just started working at the company and often stayed late to familiarize myself with the work.
Alex Thorne was drinking himself into a stupor alone in his office, and as his assistant, I
could only bring him a hangover soup.
Unexpectedly, Alex suddenly hugged me, his eyes filled with that same pathetic vulnerability, utterly devoid of his usual domineering sharpness.
He kept mumbling, but I couldn’t make out the words.
Now, I realize he was probably calling out Celeste Hayes’s name.
After that day, my relationship with Alex gradually became complicated.
It wasn’t until Celeste returned that things slowly became clear again.
But now, this man was baffling me.
He was the one who wanted to draw a clear line, to end things cleanly, so why was he still clinging to me?
I tried hard to push Alex out the door, but he stood rooted to the spot as if cemented
there.
He had been drinking, quite a lot, and the heavy smell of alcohol wafted into my nostrils.
When he spoke, the scent grew even stronger.

“Chloe, are you trying to kick me out?”
“We were together for five years. Are you really kicking me out for Liam Harrison, someone you’ve only just met?”
My body trembled slightly.
“Chloe” was my nickname.

But Alex rarely called me that. More often, it was during our intimate moments, at the height of passion, that he would murmur it endlessly.
We had been together for five years, almost every night, and we knew each other too
well.
Alex knew my softest spot, my deepest vulnerability.
But now, that weakness felt like honey covered in thorns.
Swallowing it would only leave me riddled with wounds.
My lips were already bleeding from being bitten, and I looked at him with icy resolve.
“Alex Thorne, I told you, we have no relationship anymore. We’re over.”
“This is my home now. I need you to leave!”
He suddenly went wild, as if he’d lost his mind.
Perhaps it was the alcohol fueling his rage, or something else entirely, but he screamed hysterically,
“I haven’t agreed! As long as I don’t agree, we’re not over!”
“So, what do you want? To marry Celeste Hayes on one hand, and secretly keep me
hanging on the other?”
He froze, his mouth closing, saying nothing more.

In that instant, a tidal wave of disappointment, sadness, pain, and indignation washed
over me.
I looked at him calmly and spoke a single sentence.
“Alex Thorne, do you know? From today on, I have absolutely no illusions about you left.”
The words hit him like a sword, slicing into him.
His already bloodshot eyes became even more distorted, almost monstrous.
He stumbled back two steps, breathing heavily, sweat beading on his forehead.
“No, Chloe, I know you like me, you love me! How could you give up so easily?!”
“Do you know, when I saw you hugging that Harrison guy just now, my heart shattered!”
I suddenly laughed, a laugh Alex didn’t understand at all.
But I was laughing at my own foolish delusions.
He had known my true feelings all along, but what did it get me?
Only a heart full of scars.
Now he was talking about a shattered heart, but it was just him seeing me as his private
property.
He couldn’t stand the idea of me escaping his control.
“Alex Thorne, that was the old Chloe Davis. The current me has no love left for you.”
His pupils suddenly constricted.
I said no more, only pushed him out of my rental.
Alex stiffened, unwilling to leave. Unable to do anything else, I threatened to call the building management, even the police, before he reluctantly stepped out.

But after that night,
Alex Thorne became even more persistent.
He even started showing up directly at Harrison Industries,..
