The woman, whose name I would later leam was Lisa, glared even harder.
“Yes, I’m talking about you!” she snapped. “You’re shameless. Zane would never like someone like you his heart belongs to Jenna! You’re nothing but a stand–in.”
Ah. Now it all made sense. She was part of Team Jenna, the “Ture love Fan Club.”
I finished the last bite of my cake, then slipped effortlessly into character.
“I know,” I said softly. “I would never come between them.”
Liga looked like she had just punched a pillow. Her face turned red with frustration as she stomped her foot and stormed off.
I calmly turned back to my plate and downed a glass of sweet wine.
Rich people’s parties really were something else–even the alcohol tasted better here.
Before I knew it, I had polished off an entire row of glasses.
That’s when the dizziness hit me.
Little stars danced in front of my eyes as I wobbled to my feet. I figured I’d better find the restroom and splash some water on my face before I made a scene.

What I didn’t notice was Lisa smirking triumphantly as she watched me stagger away.
Zane was too busy chatting with his business associates to notice what was happening.
I stumbled through the grand hall, barely managing to follow the signs for the restroom. My legs felt like jelly, and my vision blurred.
Suddenly, a strong hand grabbed my arm, steadying me.
I blinked hard, struggling to focus on the man in front of me.
“Holden? My brother’s sugar daddy?”
The man frowned, looking puzzled.
“You know Holden? Sugar daddy? What’s your connection to him?”
The heat surged through my body, and the stars in my vision blurred even more. Irritated,
I tugged at the neckline of my dress, trying to cool down.
“I’m so thirsty,” I muttered. “I need water.”
Before I could collapse, the man grabbed my hand and pulled me upright. The sudden movement made me lose my balance, and I stumbled forward.
“I need water,” I repeated desperately. “Please–I need water.”
I barely registered being guided into a room. The moment I saw the bathroom, I lunged for the sink, turning the faucet on full blast.
Without a second thought, I dove into the water, letting it wash over me.
The transformation was immediate.
As soon as my legs touched the water, they turned into a shimmering, iridescent tail.
I let out a deep sigh of relief, curling up at the bottom of the tub, finally at ease.
What I didn’t realize was that the man–Holden’s older brother, Hunter–was standing in

the doorway, staring at me in complete shock.
His entire understanding of reality had just been shattered,
Mermaids were real.
And one of them was right here in front of him.
