For an entire week, I maintained my new routine of visiting Dominic’s office with lunch. The rhythm of our days had fallen into a comfortable pattern that felt both exciting and domestic.
“No sign of Vivian Quinn today either?” I asked Lucas as he met me in the lobby of Shadowpeak Tower.
Lucas shook his head, taking the bag of food from my hands. “She secured that investment deal with Uncle Dominic and left the Northern Territory yesterday. Business in Europe, I think.”
I couldn’t help the relief that flooded through me. My wolf, Cora, had been intimidated by Vivian’s presence–the woman exuded confidence and commanded respect in a way that triggered Cora’s instinctive response to powerful she–wolves.
“Good,” I said, stepping into the elevator. “I’m not in the mood for another territorial standoff.”
Lucas chuckled. “You’re the Luna now, Amber. No need to feel threatened.”
I shot him a look. “I’m not threatened. I’m just… selective about my battles.”
The truth was, I preferred avoiding direct confrontation with someone like Vivian Quinn. She represented everything I admired and feared–a self–made she–wolf who navigated pack politics with ease.
My days had found their own rhythm. I would wake early with Dominic, exercise and have breakfast together before he left for pack business. Then I’d return to bed, catching up on sleep until it was time to prepare lunch for him.
The nights… well, the nights were something else entirely. Dominic was insatiable, and I matched his passion with my own. Our lovemaking left me physically exhausted but emotionally fulfilled. Most importantly, I no longer suffered from the nightmares about my family that had plagued me for so long.
“He’s in a meeting, but should be done in ten minutes,” Felix informed me as I reached Dominic’s office floor.
I nodded, settling into what had become “my” chair in the waiting area. “I’ll wait.”
That evening, my phone lit up with Paige’s face on the screen. I accepted the video call immediately.
“Amber!” Paige’s voice filled my apartment. “I’m coming home!”
I sat up straighter on my couch. “When?”
“Day after tomorrow. And I have a big surprise for you,” she said, her eyes twinkling with excitement.
Despite her enthusiastic words, my enhanced werewolf senses detected something off in her tone–a slight tension, perhaps? I couldn’t quite place it.
“What kind of surprise?” I asked cautiously.
Paige laughed. “If I told you, it wouldn’t be a surprise, would it? Just be ready. It’s going to change everything.”
After we hung up, I stared at my phone, puzzled. What could Paige possibly have that would “change everything“?
“One last lunch delivery before she returns,” I murmured to myself, planning the next day’s meal. I’d make venison stew- Dominic’s favorite.
Inside me, Cora purred at the thought of seeing our mate during daylight hours. The wolf part of me never tired of being near him, breathing in his scent, feeling his presence.
The next day, I carefully placed the container of venison stew in a thermal bag to keep it warm during the drive. I’d spent the morning perfecting the recipe, adding just the right amount of moonlight herbs to enhance the flavor.
I slid into the driver’s seat of my limited edition sports car–Dominic’s latest gift. The sleek vehicle responded to my touch like an extension of my body, purring to life as I started the engine.

Traffic in Silvercrest was light, and I made good time until I hit a red light three blocks from Shadowpeak Tower. I drummed my fingers on the steering wheel, impatient to see Dominic.
The impact came without warning–a sharp jolt from behind that threw me forward against my seatbelt. My head snapped back, and I let out a startled gasp.
“What the hell?” I muttered, checking my rearview mirror.
The car behind me was a familiar black sedan. Too familiar.
I stepped out of my car, anger building as I caught two scents that made Cora bristle beneath my skin. Melissa James and Ethan Blackwood.
Of all the people in Silvercrest City, it had to be them.
“Amber?” Ethan’s voice held surprise as he exited the driver’s side “I didn’t realize it was your car.”
Melissa emerged more slowly from the passenger seat, her expression a mixture of embarrassment and something else– calculation, perhaps?
The irony of the situation wasn’t lost on me. Years ago, when Ethan and I were still engaged, Melissa had called him away while we were trying on wedding dresses, claiming she’d been in a car accident–rear–ended at a stoplight, just like this. That ” emergency” had been the beginning of the end for Ethan and me.
Now, looking at them together–Ethan in his expensive suit, Melissa clutching her designer purse–I felt nothing but gratitude. Gratitude that she had taken him away from me before I made the biggest mistake of my life.
“Well,” I said, surveying the minimal damage to my bumper, “this is certainly familiar, isn’t it?”
Melissa’s eyes widened slightly. “What do you mean?”
I smiled, feeling genuinely amused. “Don’t you remember? The emergency call you made to Ethan while we were shopping for wedding dresses? You claimed someone rear–ended you at a stoplight.”
Ethan shifted uncomfortably. “Amber, that’s not-”
“It’s fine,” I interrupted, waving a hand dismissively. “Ancient history. Let’s just exchange insurance information and be done with this.”
Melissa stepped forward, one hand on her slightly rounded belly. “Actually, Amber, could we maybe—”
Before she could finish, I pulled out my phone. “I’m calling Mason. He can handle this properly.”
(Melissa’s POV)
I couldn’t take my eyes off Amber’s car. The limited edition Midnight Racer with its custom detailing and midnight blue finish- I’d seen the catalog in Ethan’s office. Only twenty had been made worldwide, and Dominic Blackwood had purchased one for his
Luna.
My fingers tightened around my purse strap. Everything Amber had came so easily to her–wealth, status, and now Dominic Blackwood himself.
Meanwhile, I was still dependent on Olivia Blackwood’s monthly allowance. Despite being Ethan’s wife, I had no access to the Blackwood Pack’s real wealth. Olivia controlled everything, doling out funds with tight–fisted reluctance.
“You need to prove yourself first,” she’d told me just yesterday. “Produce pups, secure Ethan’s lineage, then we’ll discuss a more… generous arrangement.”
The memory made my stomach clench. The pressure to conceive was constant, whispered behind my back at every pack gathering. Three months married, and still no pregnancy–it was becoming a topic of gossip.
“Melissa? Are you alright?” Ethan’s voice pulled me from my thoughts.

“Ethan,” I whispered urgently, “do something. We can’t let Dominic find out.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened, “What do you expect me to do?”
“Anything! Offer her money, apologize–just don’t let her call Dominic!”
(Amber’s POV)
I watched Ethan and Melissa whisper urgently to each other, their panicked expressions almost comical My finger hovered over Mason’s contact.
“Amber, please,” Ethan stepped forward, his voice dropping to that persuasive tone I once found charming. “Let’s handle this privately. No need to involve the pack.”
I raised an eyebrow. “You mean no need to involve your uncle Dominic?”
His face paled slightly. “This is a minor accident. We can settle this between us.”
I shook my head and pressed the call button. “Mason? It’s Amber. I’ve been in a minor accident on Moonlight Avenue, three blocks from Shadowpeak Tower.”
“Are you hurt?” Mason’s voice came through immediately, concem evident.
“I’m fine. The other driver is Ethan Blackwood.”
There was a pause, then: “I’ll be there in five minutes.”
As I ended the call, I closed my eyes briefly, trying to reach Dominic through our mate bond. The connection was still new, sometimes unpredictable, but I focused on sending him a mental image of where I was.
A sudden gasp pulled me from my concentration. Melissa had doubled over, one hand clutching her stomach, her face contorted with pain.
“Melissa?” Ethan’s voice rose in alarm. “What’s wrong?”
