Chapter 5
Ashton paused, and his arm lowered slowly. He turned abruptly.
“Dad, Blair pushed Jane down the stairs! I’m teaching her a lesson!”
I suddenly breathed a sigh of relief when I saw Craig. I ignored the pain on my face, and my lips twitched. “I never did such a thing!”
“If it wasn’t you, who did it? Don’t try to lie to me! Dad, someone with a bad character isn’t worthy of being our steward!”
I looked coldly at him. “You’re shameless, Ashton! Whether or not I did such a thing, you can find out just by investigating
“What gives you the right to cut my face? You hurt me without even investigating! You’re breaking the law!”
Jane looked at Craig with tears in her eyes as he walked toward us. “Mr. Byrd, Ms. Stone didn’t do it on purpose. It’s all my fault!”
Craig kicked Ashton about six feet away. The anger on his face was clear for all to see. “Are you sure you want to be someone who isn’t able to tell between right and wrong?”
He turned to look at my bleeding face. Then, he crouched down in front of me and carefully pulled me into his arms. “Tell the driver to get the car ready!”
Jane looked at us and said piteously, “Mr. Byrd-”
“Get lost!”
Craig did not even look back. “Are you allowing just anyone to join our family nowadays?”
“Dad, Jane is the woman I like. We’re going to get married!”
Ashton explained urgently. Craig kicked him in the chest again. “You get out of my sight, too, Ashton! Beat this woman up and toss her out!”
Craig’s demeanor was so forceful that no one dared to disobey. Ashton trembled involuntarily. Soon, security guards approached Jane.
“Don’t be afraid. I’m here.”
Craig gently wiped away the beads of blood on my face, looking tender. I leaned against him weakly. “My face hurts so much. Why did you only come now?”
Ashton looked at us, his eyes bright red. He was ignoring Jane, who was getting beaten up
“Dad, let her go! I was wrong, alright! Is there any need for you to do this?”

“What’s wrong with what I’m doing? Blair and I are supposed to go and get married tomorrow. She’ll be your mother! But you ruined it all. You’d better be polite to her from now on, you brat!”
“What did you say, Dad?” Ashton shouted in disbelief. He took a few steps forward.
“You’d better show some respect in the future,” Craig ordered icily.
At that moment, the driver called. Craig picked me up and put me in the car.
Before getting in, I looked at Ashton, who still looked dazed. I suddenly felt pleased. In my past life, I’d barely ever interacted with Craig.
It was only after he was killed that I found out that my mother had been his first love. That was why he would pay attention to me whenever he saw me.
After getting reborn, I decided just to go straight to him. In the car, Craig looked at my face sympathetically. “I should have taken you with me so that you wouldn’t have gotten injured.”
I reached out to take his hand and held it tightly without speaking. My silence could trigger his protective instincts.
The doctor said that the wound on my face was too deep and that it would take a long time to heal. Craig’s expression turned dark.
“You can deal with this incident however you want!”
My face was bandaged, and I spoke in a low voice. “I don’t want you to get revenge, but she needs to be punished accordingly.”
He held my hand and reassured me. “Alright. Leave it to me.”
I lay in bed, hatred creeping into my heart. How could I not want to get revenge? I wouldn’t forgive either Ashton or Jane!
