Chapter 13
But in Clayton’s eyes, this was clearly Aline’s way of getting revenge and making him look bad. “What do you want then? Huh? What will it take to shut your friend up? Do you want compensation? Fine. What do you want me to give you?”
Aline looked at the flustered man in front of her-worked up, but not for her. Once again, all his concern was for Joyce. Not her.
And suddenly, she found herself thinking, ‘How could I be so foolish, back then, to believe this man would ever truly love me?’
“I don’t want anything from you,” she said flatly. “I just want to resign.”
“What?” Clayton was caught off guard. Even Jimmy, standing nearby, looked stunned.
“I’ll submit my resignation tomorrow,” Aline said. “I’ll hand over all my responsibilities and tie up any loose ends. From that point on, Hill Group has nothing to do with me.”
She was going to divorce him-so she might as well cut every tie clean. If she was going to walk away, she was going to do it completely.
“You’re threatening me?” Clayton frowned. “You’re quitting just because I didn’t protect you during the shooting? That’s your bargaining chip?”
“No,” Aline replied calmly. “This isn’t a threat-it’s a deal. I resign, walk away from the company, and whatever hap- pens between you and Joyce has nothing to do with me.”
As more and more people turned to look at them, Clayton sighed and rubbed his forehead. “Fine. If that’s what you want. Maybe a break is just what you need.”
Aline said nothing more. She turned and walked out of the station with Clarice by her side.
Inside, Jimmy stared after them in disbelief. “Wait-she’s really quitting? Does she seriously think she can get a better job out there?”
“Let her,” Clayton said coolly. “It won’t be long before she comes crawling back.”
“I can’t stand people who use their jobs as leverage,” Joyce said smugly. “Quitting just because of some petty drama? What a waste of her degree from the National Defense Academy.”
“So what if she graduated from National Defense Academy?” Jimmy scoffed. “Out in the real world, she’s nothing. Probably end up waiting tables or running errands somewhere.”
Joyce smiled faintly. Exactly. National Defense Academy graduate or not, Aline was still just a woman who clung to men and resented those who did better than her.

Take away the man she depended on, and she had nothing. Three years of marriage, and all she’d done was coast along at Hill Group, riding on Clayton’s name. That was why Joyce had always looked down on her-there was noth- ing admirable about a woman like that.
The next day, Aline arrived at the office and informed her project team that she was resigning.
“What? You’re leaving, Aline? Just like that?”
“But what about the project? Who’s going to lead it?”
Most of the employees had no idea she was Mrs. Hill. Only Clayton’s secretary knew they were married.
But the team knew one thing-Aline was incredibly capable. Every project she touched got done, and done well.
Now that she was stepping down, everyone was worried.
“Mr. Hill will assign someone new soon,” she said simply. Then she picked up her printed resignation letter and head- ed to Clayton’s office.
Inside, along with Clayton, was his sister, Tanisha.
He glanced at the letter, and his expression darkened. “You’re really going through with this?”
“I thought I made myself clear yesterday,” Aline replied coolly.
“If you’re doing this to play games with me, then I have to say-I’m seriously disappointed,” he said.
Aline almost laughed. The irony was unreal. She was the one who had every reason to be disappointed.
“Clayton, I’m not playing games. I just don’t want to work alongside a man who, when danger struck, didn’t hesitate to shove his own wife aside.”
