Chapter 14

His expression twisted, dark and cold. “Fine. But don’t come back to me crying when you regret it.”

After speaking, Clayton signed Aline’s resignation letter, then said coolly, “From now on, Tanisha will be taking over your projects. Before you leave, make sure everything is handed over to her properly.”

Tanisha lifted her chin with smug satisfaction. Fresh out of college, she was eager to prove herself and finally make

her mark.

“Don’t worry, Clayton-I’ll make sure everything gets done. If Aline could handle it, I can definitely do better.”

In her eyes, Aline had never been anything special. During the handover, she didn’t bother hiding her arrogance.

“I thought your job would be difficult, but turns out it’s pretty simple,” she sneered. “No wonder you’ve been cruising along in my brother’s company all this time.”

Aline ignored her jabs, but the rest of the project team heard everything loud and clear.

‘Simple? Is she kidding?’

The proposal Aline had written was filled with advanced technical details-it was anything but easy. The truth was, if Tanisha thought it was simple, it could only mean one thing: she had no idea what she was talking about.

‘Does she really think someone like her can lead a project like this?’

Still, no one dared speak up. After all, Tanisha was Clayton’s sister. Cross her, and you might as well start packing your things.

With a flick of her hand, Tanisha tossed aside one of Aline’s carefully prepared project plans.

“Whatever. I’ve seen enough. Just hurry up and get out already. And don’t even think about coming back-my brother’s company isn’t a shelter for rejects.”

The project team, hearing that, could barely hide their dismay. Her ignorance was astounding.

It made them even more reluctant to see Aline go. As she prepared to leave, their eyes were filled with genuine regret

and reluctant admiration.

Aline smiled faintly. “Don’t worry-I have no plans to come back. But you? This so-called shelter for trash-sounds like it suits you just fine.”

Tanisha’s face darkened. ‘Is Aline calling me trash?’

She raised her hand to slap her-but before she could make contact, Aline caught her wrist mid-air.

“Tanisha,” she said coldly, “I used to put up with you out of respect for Clayton. But now? I don’t owe you anything.”

“Ow-let go! Let go of me!” Tanisha shrieked, trying to yank her hand free.

Aline released her, and Tanisha instinctively clutched her wrist. She opened her mouth to hurl another insult, but the moment she met Aline’s sharp, icy gaze, the words caught in her throat.

A chill ran down her spine.

She didn’t relax until Aline had left the building. Even then, she pursed her lips, still stewing.

She thought, ‘Why did she seem scary just now? Ridiculous.’

A few days later, when Clarice heard Aline had officially resigned, she practically burst with excitement.

“Finally! You should’ve left that job ages ago. You bent over backwards for Clayton, and he never gave you an ounce of credit. Does he really think he could’ve taken the company public without you?”

Aline gave a faint smile but said nothing.

“So what’s next?” Clarice asked. “Got any plans?”

“Not yet,” Aline said. “I might go back to the military.”

“Well, why don’t you try working at my company first?” Clarice said enthusiastically. “I wanted to recruit you back when you first left the service. You were doing cutting-edge work in drone tech. If you hadn’t helped Clayton build his business, you’d probably be one of the top names in the field by now.”

Aline lowered her eyes thoughtfully. Back in college, she’d specialized in drone research. During her time in the mili- tary, she’d even participated in several classified drone programs. More recently, before she resigned, she had been preparing to lead Hill Group’s next big drone project.

Now that she had left the company-and Clayton-joining Clarice’s firm didn’t seem like a bad idea at all.
