Chapter 11
Lorenzo’s head snapped up. He raped at Eugene as if Eugene had just confessed to a crime. “You’re telling me hatever i bas your pantst
if that fever doesn’t break soon, I swear I’ll put you in a hospital bed too, Eugane prowled.
Lorenzo shuddered and shook his head. “Hell in. That’s one messed up way to get a fever–not my thing” With that, he checked her ever briskly scribbled a prescription, and administered a shot.
As the IV needle went in, Lorraine flinched, curling into herself and kicking the blanket away
“Cover her back up, unless y
you want her to get worse,” Lorenzo said, not looking up from the IV line. “Now”
Eugene hesitated, then moved closer with obvious reluctance, He bent down, gathered the blanket, and draped it over her—his movements careful despite the tightness in his expression.
Lorraine gave a faint whimper before finally settling.
Lorenzo removed the tourniquet and glanced at Eugene. “You like her?”
Eugene arched a brow. “Do you really think that’s possible?”
Lorenzo scoffed, shaking his head.
Eugene stood by the window, posture straight and unreadable. After a few seconds, he turned his head slightly, his voice low and flat. “She’s useful”
Lorenzo’s grin faded as he looked between Eugene and Lorraine, baffled
He couldn’t tell whether Eugene was serious or just playing games. But one thing was clear–in Eugene’s world, people were either useful or they were nothing. Useful ones stayed; the rest got tossed aside.
“I’m out of here,” Lorenzo said, turning toward the door. “Check her temperature when she wakes up. And if you can’t find a thermometer.
He paused, his eyes flicking down to Eugene’s waist with a dark chuckle. “Well, I’m sure you’ve got another instrument that could do the job.”
Eugene shot him an icy look, and Lorenzo, getting the message, quickly shut his mouth and left.
The next morning, Lorraine woke to an unfamiliar ceiling. As her vision cleared, she saw she was alone in the hospital room. She struggled to sit up, her legs barely off the bed when a nurse rushed in.
“Oh, Ms. Shaw–where are you going?” the nurse exclaimed. “Do you need help to the bathroom?”
“I’m leaving,” Lorraine said flatly, sliding her feet into slippers as she moved toward the door.
The nurse gaped at her. “You still have a fever. And where’s that man who brought you in? You can’t just walk out like this.”
The nurse blushed at the thought of Eugene. He was strikingly handsome, with a strong presence that commanded attention. She couldn’t forget how effortlessly he’d carried Lorraine in, his strong build and sharp features leaving a lasting impression.
Lorraine stiffened and fixed the young nurse with a glare. “I’m an adult. I don’t need permission to leave
The nurse hesitated. “Well, you’re right, but your boyfriend-
“He’s not my boyfriend,” Lorraine snapped, done with this conversation
“I’m married.”

Lorraine couldn’t be bothered to argue. She turned on her heat and walked away.
“Wait!” The nurse rushed after her, catching her wrist. “Don’t do this! Your boyfriend. I mean, your secret lover actually cares about you. If he finds out you left without saying anything-
Lorraine nearly scoffed at the muse’s words. He cares about me? Please. He only dragged me here after his enthusiasm left me feverish–just to keep his toy functional Joke’s on him. I’m leaving before he gets another chance.
“Look!” Lorraine gestured vaguely across the room. “That patient’s IV is finished–they’re calling for you. Can’t you hear them?”
“Where? I don’t The nurse spun around in confusion
Seizing the moment, Lorraine dashed through the doors.
