Chapter 12
The hospital gown flapped around Lorraine’s legs as she stumbled outside. She reached into her pocket and fall a surge of around the phone.
As she pulled it out, the screen lit up to reveal an unread message sent an hour earlier from Sheila Stuard, her best friend,
Sheila: [Lorraine, where are you? I found Stephen!]
The executive meeting at Moore Group was well underway when Isaac entered. Eugene looked up, a brief flash of annoyance lightening his features.
A hush fell over the room as Eugene’s piercing stare made the others shalt uncomfortably.
Isaac approached and bent close, his words coming in a rushed whisper. “Ms. Shaw is…”
Eugene remained impassive as Isaac finished his report. “Should we… stop her?” Isaac ventured cautiously.
Eugene simply leaned back in his leather chair, his composure unshaken. “Leave her be,” he said calmly. What could the possibly accomplish, even if she found Stephen?
Lorraine huddled in Sheila’s cherry–red SUV, trembling despite the roaring heater.
She gripped the seatbelt, her knuckles turning white. “Sheila, what if he’s sick? Or hurt? Should we call an ambulance to meet us?”
After a pause, she added, “Or maybe we should bring a doctor. You know how fragile his health is. I’m terrified he might.”
Lorraine still couldn’t comprehend Stephen’s disappearance. He’d vanished on their wedding night, leaving her with no answers.
Sheila pressed the accelerator harder and threw Lorraine an exasperated glance. “Use your head. Who are we talking about? Stephen Moore, the youngest heir of the Moore family. If he were sick, how could he not be in a hospital!”
“What if he’s too hurt to move?” Lorraine started imagining worst–case scenes.
Sheila rolled her eyes. “Would you relax? You’re getting worked up over nothing.”
Lorraine took a deep breath, mentally repeating the unfamiliar apartment address Sheila had provided
“Enough speculation. You can fret over him later. Right now, let’s just find “We’re here. Get ready.”

On the seventeenth floor of a luxury apartment building, Lorraine paused uncertainly, “Are you sure this is the right place?” She studied the unfamiliar door number with a frown. “I’ve been to nearly all of Stephen’s properties, but I don’t recognize this one.”
“The Moore family owns half the city,”
Sheila replied, unable to hide her impatience. “You really think you know every single place?”
She shook her head and added, “Last night I asked about Stephen in my group chat, and someone spotted his car in the garage here this morning. him go up in the elevator and never come back down. Now knack.”
Before Lorraine could react, Shella marched forward and rapped sharply on the door. Stephen! Open up!
There was no response. Lorraine frowned “Maybe he’s not here?”
