Chapter 6
Jaxon and Scarlett worked together to rush him to the school infirmary.
After checking his heart rate and blood pressure, the school nurse breathed a sigh of relief.
“Preliminary diagnosis–seems like excessive worrying and stress.”
“What’s been going on with him lately? Any particularly upsetting situations?”
Scarlett was sweating with anxiety.
“How could this happen?”
“Could it be… because he’s been tutoring me, he missed his chance to be with Winter?”
“Jaxon, is that what you think too?”
Jaxon’s throat tightened.
For the first time ever, he actually wanted to answer “yes“.
But he couldn’t bring himself to say it, only managing a forced, bitter smile.
“How could that be?”
“He’s just worried about not being able to teach you well–too much pressure.”
“We chose to give up our chances at top universities ourselves, specifically to tutor you properly.”
“Don’t overthink it, or we’ll start worrying about your health too.”
Scarlett’s frown relaxed slightly.
“You’re right, I’ve been holding you back.”
“Someone like me with such a worthless life–how could I deserve to go to college?”
“If it weren’t for you two helping me, I would’ve already been married off to that drunk by now…”
For the first time, Jaxon didn’t feel that familiar pang of sympathy.
He shook his head dismissively.
“I already told you it’s fine.”

“You should head back to class.”
Scarlett was stunned.
In the past, whenever she brought this up, their reactions were always so intense.
Either they’d beat their chests promising to help her get into Harvard University.
Or they’d spend their precious savings on chocolate to give her something sweet for comfort.
After she left tactfully.
Jaxon stayed by Kai’s side, his mind flooded with happy memories of the three of us from years past.
Those moments that had once seemed so ordinary.
Now he picked them up over and over, savoring every one of my expressions and smiles.
The more he thought about it.
The more he felt like he was going crazy with grief.
Half an hour later, Kai finally woke up.
When Ms. Rodriguez learned about his condition, she called them to her office for a heart–to–heart.
The new SAT just rolled out–way easier than the old version.”
‘But if you spend another year in prep courses, not only will it be grueling, the competition will be much fiercer!”
‘For this SAT, you need to prepare properly. There’s no need to sacrifice your own grades helping others.”
Kai explained weakly.
Ms. Rodriguez, you know the situation.”
Scarlett’s family circumstances are difficult. If we don’t help her, she has no way out.”
Are you saying this because Winter asked you to?”
axon quickly jumped in.
Did she have a change of heart?”
These are all just excuses–she wants us to stop caring about Scarlett, right?”
Ms. Rodriguez shook her head and sighed.

“You’re overthinking this!”
“Honestly, after graduation you’ll all be adults. I actually thought Winter might choose one of you.”
“But it takes two to tango, and she wasn’t dancing.”
”
“Once she learned you chose to stay and help Scarlett join the prep courses, Winter barely hesitated before choosing to study abroad.”
“Unless there’s someone she can’t bear to leave behind, she’s not the type to be trapped domestically.”
Jaxon was shocked.
“She didn’t hesitate at all?”
Ms. Rodriguez nodded.
“That’s right. So mature… not like a typical teenage girl.”
Kai’s heart jolted.
Various memories surfaced in his mind.
He’d seen me at 7, at 17, and at 77.
On the phone, I really hadn’t sounded like something a 17–year–old would say.
But if I had also been reborn…
Impossible…
Even if reborn, I should have chosen to stay by their side.
It must be because this young girl’s heart was hurt too deeply.
That’s why I chose to leave.
Thought of that, they made up their minds.
After the SAT, they would win me back.
Otherwise, every aimless minute and second was simply torturous.
They could barely breathe.
