Chapter 7
Spring turned to summer.
The June SAT battle drums had already begun beating.
But no matter how hard Scarlett studied, she couldn’t grasp the material or understand the concepts.
What she loved most was dragging them to the drugstore to buy makeup, dolling herself up like she was going to a
party.
She wouldn’t listen to English audio practice, only to Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” on repeat.
And constantly, they had to baby her through her dramatic emotional breakdowns.
Jaxon was starting to lose steam.
If I were in her shoes, knowing my future was on the line, how could I possibly waste time like this?
He even found himself getting annoyed while reviewing English vocabulary with Scarlett.
‘What the hell is going on?”
‘It’s such a short word–if you’d just read it twice you’d remember it!”
Scarlett was startled by his sudden outburst, looking completely lost.
‘Jaxon, don’t be mad.”
‘I’m just stupid, I can’t help it.”
‘You know my situation, with my dad and all…”
Kai couldn’t help but cut her off.
‘Your dad’s already got his eye on that drunk from down the street.”
‘You don’t need to bring it up every five minutes.”
‘If you can’t focus and study properly, there’s no point in us teaching you.”
‘Look, how about this–we’ll go talk to your dad and work something out. Maybe you can get a job in the city instead of getting married.”
Scarlett immediately shot that down, looking panicked.

“Absolutely not!”
Realizing how that sounded, she softened her voice.
“Sorry, my dad’s got a terrible temper.”
‘If he’s been drinking, he might get violent–someone could really get hurt!”
So they dropped it.
The tutoring session ended on a sour note.
But Jaxon couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off about Scarlett’s reaction.
He suggested, “Look, the whole problem is her being forced into marriage, right?”
‘If we go talk to him, we’d be doing a good thing.”
Kai agreed.
So they skipped their last class that evening and headed to Scarlett’s house.
Her father was outside drying grain.
From his clothes and appearance, he looked like an honest, hardworking farmer.
Nothing like the lazy deadbeat who’d sell his daughter for dowry money.
When Kai asked his questions, Scarlett’s father got so angry he threw down his hoe and slapped his thigh.
That ungrateful girl has been lying to all of you!”
Turns out she wants to marry that businessman who comes around buying grain, and when I told her to get a job n the city, she refused!”
She said it’s either college or marrying someone rich!”
axon stood there frozen.
This is…”
‘Damn it! She’s lost her mind, and she made us lose ours too!”
‘We drove Winter away to another country over her lies!”
Kai was so angry the veins in his forehead were bulging.
‘So when she tried to drown herself, she brought it on herself!”

“Dressing up like a peacock every day, trying to seduce men, and then using us as her ticket to college!”
“No wonder she jumped in that river after getting herself in trouble and becoming unmarriageable!”
While they were still fuming, Scarlett suddenly came running home.
“I knew you’d be here!”
“Skipping class to come dig up dirt on me?”
“Of course my dad’s gonna say I was seducing men–gives him an excuse to marry me off to some drunk!”
Hearing her words, her father clutched his chest in anger.
Then he suddenly raised his hoe and swung it toward his daughter.
“Still lying!”
“How did I end up raising such a devil!”
Right in the middle of the chaos, a fat, greasy–looking stranger walked into the yard.
“Hey there, Scarlett, what’s wrong?”
“I was hoping we could catch a movie tonight–think you could skip tutoring?”
It was that businessman.
Then Scarlett’s face went white as a sheet, cold sweat beading on her forehead.
“Let me explain…“
“I didn’t have a choice! I’m broke–what else am I supposed to do but rely on men?”
“You guys like me too, don’t you? He’s your competition–shouldn’t you be a little worried about that?”
