The millennium was approaching
Dad said he really missed me.
My husband was swamped with business, so he carved out a piece of his domestic operations for me and wanted me to teach our daughter how to take over eventually.
I felt a bit helpless about it.
She’s just a teenager–if she’s not out partying and eating junk food, that’s already pretty good. What could she possibly learn?
My husband kissed my forehead.
“If you run into any old friends, make sure to say hi.”
“Without them, how would I have ever met an angel like you?”
I laughed and pushed back.
“How could it be that much of a coincidence?”
“Besides, they probably graduated from some fancy school and became executives by now.”
“The people handling client entertainment gigs are usually just junior sales reps, right?”
My husband kept clinging to me, kissing me over and over.
I practically had to use some martial arts moves to pry him off.
Then I booked afternoon flights, and my daughter and I flew back home.
JFK Airport was packed.
I wandered around aimlessly, my eyes darting everywhere.
But I could feel two pairs of eyes on me, like someone was watching.
Then I turned to look.
I froze in place.
My daughter tugged at my hand.

“What’s wrong?”
I shook my head and walked calmly toward them.
Kai’s eyes were bloodshot red.
‘Is this your niece?”
[axon studied me and my daughter inch by inch.
‘You never mentioned her. She’s gotten so big.”
[ smiled faintly.
‘This is my daughter.”
‘My biological daughter.”
Both their faces went deathly pale, and tears started falling uncontrollably.
Kai rubbed his eyes.
‘I waited for you for so long, so damn long.”
“Never thought you’d already moved on first.”
Jaxon’s fingers were clenched so tight they turned white.
“Why the rush?”
“What if you hadn’t figured things out yet…”
I put a finger to my lips.
“Don’t confuse the kid.”
Then I turned away and made an urgent call to the project manager.
“The sales reps aren’t professional enough. Replace them.”
The project manager sounded pissed off.
“Those two idiots are walking around like zombies–they’ve screwed up so many deals for me!”
“Just wait, I’m firing their asses!”
“They’re in their thirties–let’s see what company will take them now!”

When I turned back around, both of them had disappeared.
My daughter handed me a cold bun.
“Those two guys randomly gave this to me.”
“They said they’d been practicing making them for a long time, wondering if it still tasted like it used to.”
I patted her head.
“Don’t take things from strangers anymore.”
“If we see a dog later, give the bun to it. Don’t waste food.”
But my daughter looked confused.
“Mom, were they strangers?”
I nodded.
“Yeah, don’t really know them.”
“Come on, let me show you around your homeland properly.”
My daughter and I walked off arm–in–arm, chatting and laughing.
Yet, those two gazes hidden in the corner.
Hurt once.
And again.
