“Gone? Where did she go?”

Larry froze at the words, the urgency on his face instantly solidifying. The astonishment on the others’ faces was also evident.

None of them had ever considered the possibility that Jennifer would leave.

Over the years, they had watched Kevin experience ups and downs because of that accident, and they had seen people come and go around him.

Even they, back then, seeing Kevin’s unpredictable nature, hadn’t had the courage to stay by his side all the time.

There had only ever been one Jennifer. She came to his side when he was at his lowest, giving him the utmost pa- tience and tolerance. No matter how he hit or scolded her, she never thought of leaving.

Why suddenly…?

Just then, his phone rang again suddenly. Almost instinctively, Kevin answered it.

“Jennifer? Where are you…?”

But before he could finish, Emily’s voice came from the other end, “Kevin, I’ve sprained my ankle. Can you take me to the hospital?”

In the past, Kevin would have rushed over immediately. But perhaps because Jennifer’s sudden departure had left him flustered, he actually refused instinctively.

“I’m busy now. Find someone else.”

At this, even Larry and the others looked at him in surprise. But seeing him keep his distance from Emily, they were naturally pleased.

Emily hadn’t expected such a blunt rejection. Clenching her teeth, her face stiff and gloomy, she still forced a smile of understanding, her voice thick with disappointment.

“Alright… Did something happen with Jennifer? Is that why you rushed off earlier…”

Only then did Kevin remember he’d knocked something over in his haste. After a brief pause, he still answered, “Wait for me. I’m coming now.”

The call ended as he turned back toward the banquet hall, leaving the group glancing at each other.

Hospital.

“Just a minor bump. Apply some ointment and rest for a few days, and you’ll be fine.”

After the doctor reviewed Emily’s examination report and returned it to Kevin, he finally felt relieved knowing she was okay.

Just as he was about to take Emily home, a familiar figure suddenly appeared in his sight.

“Jennifer!” His expression changed instantly. Without regard for Emily being right there, he rushed out and grabbed that person.

Perhaps because of that message he’d received earlier, Kevin held on with all his strength, as if afraid she’d escape again.

But when he turned the person around and saw the unfamiliar face, he realized he’d mistaken her for someone else.

Suddenly grabbed by a stranger, pain shot through his wrist. He hissed softly, face grimacing. “Who the hell are you?”

“Sorry, wrong person.’

He awkwardly released his grip, apologizing dazedly as he watched the figure retreat, unable to snap out of his trance.

It wasn’t her.

Had she really left?

“Kevin, what’s wrong?” Emily barely suppressed the resentment in her chest, forcing a smile as she limped toward him. Seeing him still staring blankly at where that person disappeared, she couldn’t help speaking first.

He shook his head, supporting her toward the ward. After settling her inside, he turned and stepped out, dialing his as-

sistant.

“Find out where Jennifer went.”

That night, Kevin returned to the Hill’s home at his mother’s request.

Just as he was pondering how to explain Jennifer’s absence, Mrs. Hill showed no surprise at his solitary return. Beam- ing, she pulled him inside.

“Perfect timing! Maria just finished cooking. It’s your birthday today-she made your favorite dishes. Come try them.”
