Chapter 11
Kevin was ushered to the dining table. When he glanced up, an unfamiliar woman sat across from him, stirring a strange feeling in his chest. He turned to Mrs. Hill, asking casually, “And this is…?”
“This is Vincent’s daughter, Barbara.” Mrs. Hill replied, then smiled warmly at Barbara while putting some food in her bowl. “This is my son, Kevin. Just call him Kevin.”
“Thank you, Mrs. Hill.” Barbara smiled and nodded to Mrs. Hill, then looked at Kevin again, reached out her hand to him, “Kevin, just call me Barbara.”
Barbara naturally knew what this dinner was for. The Hill and Smith families were well-matched, and coincidentally, the two families were recently discussing cooperation-
And this dinner, besides bringing the two families closer, also had the intention of arranging a marriage.
Barbara knew Kevin had two women by his side, but she didn’t mind.
After all, one of those two women had abandoned him when he was down and out. He might temporarily be unable to let go of her due to the resentment from being abandoned, but who can truly hold no grudge against someone who abandoned them?
The other was just a country girl with no background. Without the Hill family’s sponsorship, she’d never have crossed paths with Kevin.
Even after earning some favor by caring for him post-accident, she remained insignificant.
After all, in Kevin’s mind, she couldn’t even measure up to Emily.
Kevin instantly grasped his mother’s intention. His expression darkened as he stared at her outstretched hand, refusing to take it.
The air grew tense until Mrs. Hill smoothed things over with practiced ease. Gently pulling Barbara back onto the so- fa, she chimed, “Don’t take it personally-that’s just how Kevin is. He’ll warm up once you get to know him.”
Barbara looked stiff but remained silent.
A golden boy always has his own temper, especially after what he’s been through.
Mrs. Hill had hoped they’d get acquainted first and take things slow, but never expected Kevin to be so uncoopera- tive; Barbara tried to break the ice but he ignored her, and when Mrs. Hill stepped in, he dodged the topic and kept up his dismissive act.
From start to finish, Kevin acted like Barbara didn’t exist; she’d tolerated it at first, but seeing this, even the most pa-

tient person would snap, so she suddenly stood up and walked out.
“Auntie, I don’t think Kevin wants to keep talking. Maybe we should just drop this.”
The meal ended awkwardly; Mrs. Hill helplessly walked Barbara out of the Hill’s home, then shot Kevin an irritated look.
“What’s wrong with you? I asked you home for dinner, and you made this mess.”
Until Barbara walked away, Kevin didn’t even look up once, just kept eating his food. Hearing Mrs. Hill’s words, he casually replied, “When you called me back, you didn’t mention this.”
“Recently, our families have been cooperating. I just thought it could be a way to make friends?” Mrs. Hill said re- proachfully, but seeing his indifferent look, she sighed again, “Fine, since you don’t like this one, I’ll look for anoth-
er.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Kevin put down his knife and fork, “Don’t waste your effort. I won’t go.”
“Kevin, I’m not rushing you on purpose, but you have to get married someday…” Hearing this, Mrs. Hill also sighed, “I know you still can’t let go of that woman Emily, but Kevin, don’t forget, when you had that accident, the first one to cut ties with you was her!”
Kevin’s mother mentioned Emily, and though he should have defended her, his words unexpectedly shifted: “What about Jennifer? Didn’t you always want her as your daughter-in-law?”
Hearing Jennifer’s name, Mrs. Hill froze momentarily before blurting out: “Jennifer? Didn’t she go abroad already?”
