Chapter 12

Kevin’s expression darkened. He snapped to his feet, demanding: “What do you mean by that?”

Caught off guard by his intensity, Mrs. Hill’s eyes darted away. She stammered: “Wh-what? You must’ve misheard!”

She turned to flee, but Kevin moved faster-blocking her path in a blink.

He blocked her way completely, silent yet unyielding.

Mrs. Hill even felt that if she didn’t clarify, he’d stubbornly hold his ground indefinitely.

Suddenly, a wave of irritation surged within her-just over Jennifer? Was it necessary to corner his own mother like this?

“That’s right, she went abroad. What of it?”

Seeing Mrs. Hill’s demeanor and recalling her odd behavior today, Kevin instantly grasped the situation.

“Where did you send her?” His face darkened, voice tight with barely contained fury.

At this, Mrs. Hill’s expression soured. She strolled to the dining table and sat down, perfectly composed. After a side- long glance at his stormy face, she finally smiled. “Kevin, no need for harsh words. What’s this about me ‘sending her somewhere’?”

“She’s a living person-what could I possibly do to her? Just some poor girl with no background. If our family hadn’t paid for her education back then, who knows where she’d be now? Not only did she finish school, but she even got the chance to study abroad. She should be grateful.”

“Luckily she’s sensible enough. Agreed without any fuss…”

Kevin never imagined this was the truth.

He’d guessed Mrs. Hill might have forced her to leave, but never that Jennifer left willingly.

“Impossible!” His face turned deathly pale, voice trembling slightly.

Kevin’s mother softened at the sight of her biological son’s devastation. She coaxed him gently, “Kevin, if they could leave you so easily, they weren’t meant for you. You’re the sole heir to Hill group. Many women would love to marry you. Why dwell on those two?”

Chapter 12

After leaving the Hill’s home, Kevin headed straight to Boston’s most exclusive club.

Inside the private booth, Kevin drowned his sorrows one drink after another. Empty bottles piled before him, his mind growing fuzzy from the excess.

Larry watched him hesitantly, finally urging, “Kevin, slow down. The doctor warned against heavy drinking…”

Others chimed in with concern, yet from beginning to end, no one dared to mention Jennifer’s name.

Kevin kept downing one glass after another, completely ignoring their repeated pleas to stop.

Larry had no choice but to grab his phone and dial a number.

Emily paused before answering, surprised since she’d sensed the group’s resentment toward her since returning from

abroad.

She knew exactly why they disliked her-but couldn’t care less.

As long as Kevin overlooked those trivial details, why should anyone else matter?

Hearing the call hadn’t disconnected, she finally answered, “What is it?”

“Kevin’s drunk. Come and talk some sense into him.”

At the mention of Kevin, Emily rushed over without delay. When she entered the private room, he’d already passed

out cold.

Seeing the entire table covered with empty liquor bottles, even she was startled and instinctively asked, “What hap- pened? How did he drink this much?”
