Chapter 14
She wiped her tears and ran off. Kevin instinctively reached out but froze mid-motion.
What was he doing?
Watching Emily’s figure fade into the distance, he pressed his lips tight and stayed silent.
Forget it. He needed space to figure out what he truly wanted.

Three years passed in a blink.
Boston Airport.
A jet carved a white trail across the sky, circling for landing. Amidst the bustling terminal crowd bundled in layers, Jennifer stood out in her light blouse and skirt.
Jennifer dragged her heavy suitcase through the airport crowd, muttering under her breath, “Boston’s unseasonably cold this summer. Need to find a spot to change clothes…”
Beside her, Kyle couldn’t help but chuckle. He slipped off his coat and draped it over her shoulders. “Told you it’d be freezing this year. Should’ve listened, huh?”
His lingering warmth wrapped her completely. She parted her lips to speak, then swallowed her words. Feeling in- debted, she decided to tolerate him-for now.
Kyle took the suitcase from her and strode ahead. After a few steps, Jennifer halted abruptly.
“Gotta hit the ladies’ room. Wait for me.”
She turned toward the restroom without another word.
When she came out again, Jennifer noticed an extra person outside. He was wearing a black trench coat, leaning against the wall as if waiting for someone.
She didn’t think much of it, just glanced casually before turning to leave. But as soon as she moved, the man suddenly stirred.
He turned around, revealing the face she knew all too well.
It was Kevin.
“So it is you.” Kevin looked at Jennifer, his eyes holding some unreadable emotion. He didn’t approach, just stood firmly blocking her path.

After a long silence, he spoke again, “I saw someone rushing over earlier who looked familiar, so I came to check. How have you… been all these years?”
Jennifer didn’t really understand why he’d stopped her, but hearing his question, she hesitated briefly before nodding.
“Pretty good.”
On this point, Jennifer wasn’t lying.
Back then, she went alone to Country A, a stranger in a strange land with little money, so the start was truly tough.
Luckily, she met Kyle.
He became her landlord first, then her confidant and boyfriend.
By chance, just when she worried most about work and housing, Kyle appeared.
He was also Chinese, having moved to Country A with his father years earlier. After hustling for years, he’d opened his own clinic.
Jennifer only meant to stay temporarily, promising to move out once she found work. But days later, chatting about hometowns, they discovered they came from the same place.
He had actually been her senior at school, three grades ahead. But later, Kyle went abroad with his father, while Jen- nifer voluntarily gave up further studies to care for Kevin.
Otherwise, they might have met years earlier back home.
Yet destiny worked in mysterious ways-they missed their first chance but reunited in America. When she struggled most, he extended a helping hand and offered her shelter.
Eventually, Jennifer became the psychologist at that clinic.
Thanks to Kyle’s influence, she enjoyed considerable authority and freedom there. When her confidence wavered from losing touch with the world while caring for Kevin, it was he who patiently encouraged her to take the first brave step.
Later on, they met, grew close, and fell in love.
