Chapter 15

Kevin watched Jennifer, her lips curving with a faint smile as she reminisced, and something stirred deep within him -something was about to burst forth.

After a long silence, he finally stepped forward until he stood before her.

Kevin towered over her by a full head, his shadows enveloping her completely as he lifted a hand, hesitating to touch her before letting it drop back to his side limply.

“Jennifer, I’m sorry.”

The apology was three years overdue, but he couldn’t help thinking: three years was better than never seeing her again.

The abrupt apology caught Jennifer off guard.

“What?” she instinctively pressed, then froze as realization dawned. Unsure which past incident he meant, she fell silent.

Across from her, Kevin rushed to explain, “I didn’t know Mom would force you out. I never meant―”

Jennifer shook her head, cutting him off.

“Mrs. Hill didn’t force me. She merely proposed it when I was already planning to leave.”

Kevin’s heart sank further at her words.

Over the years since Jennifer left, Kevin had imagined countless possibilities-especially after learning of his moth- er’s involvement in her departure.

He couldn’t help clinging to the hope that she hadn’t left voluntarily, but had been forced out.

He’d pictured their reunion countless times: Would she beam with joy? Or would she still be upset with him?

But never had he imagined she’d chosen to leave willingly, greeting him with such icy detachment-as if he were merely some insignificant acquaintance from her past.

A sharp pang seized his chest. His lips parted, words trapped behind the breath caught in his throat.

She was so heartless. After all these years apart, she wouldn’t even bother lying to him.

But giving up felt impossible. Something inside Kevin screamed in protest, insisting this couldn’t be right-she shouldn’t be this cold.

“I know everything now, Jennifer. I’m sorry. Back then, I was too narrow-minded. I’d shown you too many humiliat- ing moments. I couldn’t face you. I was young and foolish, treating pride like everything, thinking it was what I want- ed…”

As he spoke, the corners of his eyes reddened. Before Jennifer could respond, he continued,

“And I learned later how many times I’d wronged you. I’m sorry for my arrogance, for believing only what I saw. If not for what happened afterward…”

Had it not been later, when Kevin asked someone to escort Emily home but she ran off alone. Left with no choice, he sent someone to pack her belongings. That packing unexpectedly uncovered poison purchase records she hadn’t dis- posed of and leftover poison.

Only then did Kevin realize Jennifer truly hadn’t poisoned Emily.

This discovery prompted him to review the auction surveillance footage, revealing how many times he’d wronged Jennifer.

Yet the truth arrived too late – he never got to apologize in person. Now he’s finally gotten the chance, but she seems long past caring…

Truth is, Jennifer wasn’t really bothered anymore.

The truth came too late, and she’d long passed the point of caring.

What good was a light apology now? He couldn’t undo the pain she’d endured, and after all these years, Jennifer re- fused to let momentary agony consume her forever.

“Mr. Hill, anything else? If not, I should be going. My boyfriend’s waiting outside.”
