Chapter 16
The word “boyfriend” struck Kevin like a thunderbolt, leaving his ears ringing continuously.
“You… have a boyfriend?”
Seemingly puzzled by his intense reaction, Jennifer nodded again in flat confirmation.
She saw no need to hide this. Her boyfriend was certainly not presentable. She paused, then suddenly seemed to re- member something and turned to Kevin.
“By the way, we came back this time to plan our wedding. After that, we may not come back. You’re very welcome to attend.”
Her words had barely faded when a voice called her name, growing closer. She looked up and saw Kyle approaching.
“Jennifer, what took you so long in the restroom? I’ve been waiting outside for ages…” Mid-sentence, Kyle finally no- ticed Kevin beside her. Surprise flashed in his eyes. “Jennifer, who’s this?”
“He’s Kevin, CEO of Hill Group-the Hills I told you about, who sponsored my education.” Jennifer frankly intro- duced them without pretending not to know him. After a pause, she turned to Kevin, “This is Kyle, my boyfriend.”
That simple introduction stabbed him twice. He never imagined hearing Jennifer refer to him merely as her former sponsor from the Hills, whereas Kyle-that name shattered his last sliver of hope.
Before Kyle appeared, Kevin could console himself that Jennifer’s “boyfriend” might just be a lie born of their quar- rel. But the moment Kyle materialized, he could no longer deceive himself.
Kevin watched the subtle shift as Jennifer instinctively leaned toward Kyle. The way she introduced them-placing Kevin in a respectful position while positioning Kyle as someone closer-spoke volumes. Even if they weren’t dating, their bond ran deep.
“Mr. Hill, I’ve heard so much about you.” Kyle’s eyes narrowed slightly at Kevin’s name, a faint smile curling his lips that never reached his eyes.
He remembered Jennifer mentioning her past only once: born in a poor town where her parents preferred sons over daughters. They’d tried to marry her off before she could finish middle school.
Luckily, the Hills intervened, pulling her from that dire situation. They funded her education all the way through uni- versity.
Kevin looked at the shock and pain in Kevin’s eyes, instantly guessing his thoughts.

Chapter 16
After a long pause, seeing Kevin still frozen, he suddenly smiled and extended his hand.
“Speaking of which, I should thank Mr. Ge for parting with what he cherished.”

The gratitude was sincere. After all, if Kevin and the Hill family hadn’t taken Jennifer for granted-Jennifer, who had studied diligently for over a decade to escape her troubled family, yet readily gave up her promising career to care for Kevin after his accident-
Even if Kevin had just casually said “I’ll marry you” back then, perhaps none of this would have come to this point to- day.
The atmosphere between them instantly became tense. Jennifer glanced left and right, then casually waved goodbye and left with Kyle first.
Only after they had walked a distance did Jennifer give Kyle a strange look and say, “You’re acting odd today.”
Feigning confusion, he laughed it off and asked, “Odd? How? You must be mistaken.”
The suitcase wheels rattled on the ground. Jennifer thought for a moment and guessed where this odd feeling came from, finding it a bit amusing.
“You jealous of him?” Seeing her genuinely indifferent expression only made Kyle more dissatisfied.
“How could you not resent them at all? The way he and his family treated you…”
