Kevin frowned instantly upon seeing everyone huddled around the desk whispering.
The voice from behind startled them all. They instinctively hid something behind their backs, forcing awkward smiles. “Nothing, nothing…”
Before the words faded, Larry felt his hand empty.
He turned to look-sure enough, the invitation in his hand had vanished. At a glance, that extra red item in Kevin’s grip wasn’t that invitation they’d been hiding?
Kevin had already flipped open the invitation before anyone could stop him, spotting two names:
Jennifer, Kyle.
He then noticed the wedding date: October 21st.
His lips pressed into a thin line, silent. Yet everyone present shivered involuntarily, feeling the temperature seemed to drop around them-his mood had clearly soured.
“Um… we’ve got other plans, gotta run!”
Seeing his reaction, the others dared not linger. They scrambled for excuses to leave, until only Larry remained.
The next second, Larry spotted a small box reappearing in Kevin’s hand.
This wasn’t the first time Larry had seen that ring box. Over the past three years, he’d occasionally catch Kevin finger- ing it, as if longing for someone.
And who that person is, goes without saying.
“When did Jennifer come back?” He stared at the invitation, feeling something was off.
After a long silence, Kevin let out a bitter laugh before replying in a muffled voice, “Three days ago. I saw her at the airport.”
Hearing this, Larry widened his eyes.
Seeing her three days ago, receiving the invitation three days later-the determination to distance herself was unmis- takable. He paused before asking, “What did you say to her? How could…”
Before he could finish, Kevin shook his head. “She said she came back just to get married.”
At those words, Larry fell silent.

He opened and closed his mouth several times, only to let out a heavy sigh in the end.
What could he even say? After all, it was Kevin himself who had broken Jennifer’s heart back then.
Still, the memories brought a lingering sense of regret.
Back when everyone assumed Jennifer and Kevin would end up together, they all saw how she felt about him.
If she hadn’t cared, how could she have tolerated Kevin at his absolute worst?
But just then, Kevin’s voice cut through with sudden resolve: “I won’t give up.”
Jennifer had always loved him-after all, she was supposed to be his.

Kevin’s words made Larry pause in surprise. After a long moment, he looked at him with a complicated expression and asked, “What’s the point of this?”
Back when he didn’t know how to cherish her, and now Jennifer was about to marry someone else—what meaning was there in dwelling on whether to let go or not?
“There’s no ‘point’ to consider. I like her, and I absolutely won’t stand by watching her marry someone else.”
Larry was startled by his declaration and tried to reason with him, “But she’s already fallen for someone else…”
What could you do even if you refused?
He swallowed back the second half of his sentence, yet Kevin seemed to read his unspoken words. Unfazed, Kevin even smiled. “So what? I made her fall for me once-I can make it happen twice.”
Seeing persuasion was futile, Larry shook his head helplessly and sighed, ultimately saying nothing more.
“Forget it, suit yourself.”
But he knew Kevin probably wouldn’t succeed.
Perhaps he hadn’t realized yet that Jennifer was someone who wouldn’t look back once set in her ways. Just like when she decided to care for paralyzed Kevin-no matter how much he yelled at her or tried to drive her away, she never once thought of giving up.
And just like later, after he recovered, when she felt excluded, she quietly planned her departure and vanished from their world without a trace.
Maybe some people only realize what they’ve lost when they learn the hard way-things that can never be reclaimed, no matter how much regret follows.
After everyone left, Kevin took the ring from its box. Staring at the engraved letter representing Jennifer, he traced it gently and murmured:
“Jennifer, I’ll never give up on you…”
