Chapter 21

Jennifer couldn’t understand why he kept doing this. What was the point? He couldn’t keep her trapped forever-soon- er or later she’d leave. Why waste energy on these pointless efforts?

Kevin never cared about the passage of time, but he was afraid-afraid that one day she’d still walk away, just like last time they parted. So now, he clung to every chance he got to be with her.

When Jennifer counted the third sunset, Kevin returned. With him came a large batch of phalaenopsis.

She had asked for them two days earlier, when he’d asked if she wanted anything before his next visit.

Actually, the weather in Boston isn’t ideal for growing phalaenopsis orchids, but with dedication and providing proper conditions, they can thrive.

Her prolonged idleness gave her ample time to tend these flowers.

She personally transplanted each orchid into the greenhouse, meticulously caring for them. Seeing her genuine de- light, Kevin finally relaxed.

“Thank you.” After finishing, she turned to Kevin waiting at the greenhouse entrance and smiled gratefully.

He waved dismissively, a smile tugging uncontrollably at his lips.

“As long as you’re happy.” He paused, then added, “Anything you desire, I’ll move mountains to get it.”

Had Jennifer-still harboring feelings for Kevin-heard this before, she’d have been deeply touched.

After all, nothing moves the heart more than hearing someone you adore promise to find what you love.

But the Kevin now isn’t the Kevin of before, and the Jennifer today stopped being that Jennifer long ago.

All her love for him vanished the day he said he only saw her as a sister, threw punches for Emily, yet didn’t even glance at her after she was shoved down the stairs.

During her stay at the villa, Jennifer noticed each day it resembled more their shared past than the day before. She ac- cepted every change with a smile. Since he never spoke of it, she pretended not to know.

Kevin returned home from work each day, laptop in hand, and shared the same space while she went about her own activities. During meals, he sat beside her, dutifully serving her food with his knife and fork.

One evening when Kevin was running late, he called Larry over to keep Jennifer company, worried she might feel bored.

Only upon arriving at the villa and seeing her did Larry realize Kevin had directly confined Jennifer there.

“Damn it, he’s lost his mind!”

The outburst escaped him almost instinctively.

Compared to his shock, Jennifer-the one being confined-remained utterly calm as she watered the newly transplant- ed moth orchids before her.

Hearing his words, she raised an eyebrow slightly. “I thought you all knew about this.”

Kevin never hid much from Larry and his brothers, whether it was his car accident that left him paralyzed and changed his personality, or after his recovery, when he wanted to break off his relationship with her and get back to- gether with Emily,

or when he decided he wanted to be with her again. Kevin kept almost nothing from them.

She thought they all knew about her being held captive.

But judging by his reaction now, it seemed like he just found out.

Larry shook his head, also surprised by her calmness, and asked instinctively, “Aren’t you about to get married? How can you be so calm?”

“Being anxious won’t help.”

Emily pursed her lips with indifference, her voice tinged with bitterness. “He’s confiscated every means to contact the outside world. All I can do is tend to flowers to kill time.”

Hearing this, Larry’s heart sank. He opened his mouth but couldn’t find the words.

He couldn’t advise Kevin to release Jennifer, nor promise her freedom.

Those loyal to Kevin had family fortunes tied to the Hill group. They couldn’t risk his anger or abandon their families for Jennifer.

Fortunately, Jennifer never expected their help. She trusted Kyle wouldn’t keep her waiting long.
