Chapter 5
Just when I thought I was going to die there, I heard the sounds of intense fighting nearby.
The rogues tearing at me scattered in all directions and I heard a concerned voice asking, “Miss, are you okay? Can you stand up?
The patrol team had arrived just in time. They rescued me and thoughtfully took me to the hospital.
I lay on the hospital bed, aching all over. Fortunately, there was no serious damage and the doctor said that I’d be fine after a few days of rest.
The kind patrol team members helped arrange all my hospital examinations. It was not until dark that Adrian finally walked into the room with an exhausted expression.
When he saw I was awake, a flash of panic crossed his face. “Elena, how do you feel? Are you better?”
I looked at him expressionlessly without saying a word.
He rubbed his hands together guiltily. “Sophia was terrified and kept asking me to stay with her. You know how weak she is…”
Seeing that I was not arguing or making a fuss, he panicked a little and explained anxiously, “Elena, when the rogues attacked, the situation was too urgent. Sophia was right next to me, so I instinctively saved her first…”
“Besides, I didn’t know you had fallen and been caught by the rogues. With your skills, you should have been able to escape!”
I interrupted him, “When are you leaving for the southern territories?”
Adrian paused, and then said carefully, “We’re leaving tomorrow.”
“I see. You should go back now. I’m tired.” I closed my eyes and ignored him.
Adrian stood by my bedside for a long time before finally sighing softly. “I’ll go then. Remember to come find me in four days. I’ll pick you up at the train station.”
He waited a while, but when I did not respond, he quietly left.
The next day, Adrian’s mother, Margaret Whitmore, came carrying a thermos.
“Elena, Adrian asked me to take care of you.”
She awkwardly helped me adjust my pillows, complaining gently, “Going to such a distant place, Sophia definitely won’t be used to it. Adrian can be so careless sometimes. I just don’t know if he’ll be able to take good care of her…”
Halfway through, she seemed to realize something and awkwardly closed her mouth.
“Margaret, actually, the person who got the mate certificate with Adrian was Sophia.”
Margaret froze, taking a long moment to process what I had said. Then her face broke into a huge smile.
“Really? Oh Elena, you’re such a wonderful girl! You understand how Adrian and Sophia feel about each other. I always knew you had the biggest heart!”
She stood up excitedly, thanking me repeatedly. “Elena, don’t worry! I’ll definitely find you an even better mate!”
I smiled faintly, my heart full of bitterness. In my previous life, I had served her devotedly, but she still favored Sophia the most.
On her deathbed, she left her entire inheritance to Sophia. All she said to me was, “You’re a sweet girl, Elena, but Sophia is just so thoughtful.”
“Margaret, please don’t tell them about this yet.”

Margaret was smiling so widely she could not close her mouth. “Of course, of course. I understand. So what are your plans for the future?”
“I’ll be leaving tomorrow too.”
I did not reveal where I was going. She wanted to ask more questions, but I closed my eyes wearily and stopped talking to her.
She stood there for a while, but eventually left in a hurry, worried about her son’s marking ceremony.
On the day I was discharged, I did not notify anyone. No one else was home when I returned to the Northgate mansion, which made it convenient for me to pack.
I gathered everything that was mine and threw away whatever I couldn’t carry. All those gifts I had bought for Adrian over the years were just shoved carelessly in his closet. Since he clearly did not want them, I sold anything valuable and tossed the rest in
the trash.
When I was done, I went back to my room and grabbed the suitcase I had already packed.
Downstairs, I left Adrian and Sophia’s mate certificate on the kitchen table along with that train ticket. I did not take anything except the money I had managed to save up over the years. I even popped out my SIM card and threw it away.
Then I walked out of the Northgate residence for the last time, never once looking back.
