Chapter 6
A few days later, Adrian took half the day off to wait for me at the train station. He waited all day, but I never showed up.
He tried calling my phone over and over, but nobody answered.
A sense of unease crept across his chest, mixed with irritation. He called his mother, but she just mumbled vague responses and could not tell him where I had gone.
Finally, Adrian requested leave from his unit and headed back to White Moon Pack with Sophia.
The second he walked through the door, he stopped short. The house was decked out like a celebration, with streamers and balloons everywhere.
What was all this for?
He brushed past the decorations and headed straight for my room. When he opened the door, his stomach dropped.
The room was completely bare. Every single thing that belonged to me was gone.
Panic hit him out of nowhere. He spun around and nearly crashed into Margaret.
“Mom, where’s Elena? What happened to all her stuff?”
Margaret’s smile faltered for a split second before she grabbed Adrian’s hand. “Don’t worry about Elena right now. You and Sophia need to get downstairs – we’re about to start!”
“Start what?”
Before he could get another word out, Sophia appeared, looking bewildered in a gorgeous dress as someone pushed her forward.
“Your marking ceremony with Sophia, obviously!”
That was when Margaret whipped out their mate certificate, practically glowing with excitement.
Adrian grabbed the certificate, staring at it in complete disbelief.
Sophia caught sight of the name and let out a shriek. “No way! Why is my name there?”
Margaret’s eyes narrowed. “Sophia, honey, aren’t you two crazy about each other? You would’ve been together ages ago if Elena hadn’t been in the picture! She finally stepped aside, so why do you look like someone died?”
Sophia’s face went stiff before she plastered on a fake smile. “No, no! It’s just…
“I can’t steal my sister’s mate! Adrian is hers. I wouldn’t do that to her…”
Margaret cut her off irritably. “Steal? What are you talking about? Elena stepped aside willingly! Your name’s right there on the certificate!”
The phrase “stepped aside willingly” hit Adrian like a punch to the gut.
Strangely, seeing Sophia’s name on that certificate did not make him happy at all. Instead, all he could think about was my face – so quiet, so compliant.
Despite this, that same compliant person had gone behind everyone’s back to change the name on the mate certificate.
“Mom, where did Elena go?”
Margaret fidgeted, touching her nose. “I honestly don’t know. She packed up and left the day after you guys did. She just left this certificate behind.”
Adrian looked down at the piece of paper in his hands. There was a train ticket clipped to the back of it. His eyes went wide as he

stared at it.
He now realized I had been planning to leave him all along. But why? He’d promised me the mate position.
“Adi, you have to find my sister! We need to break this bond right now. You’re supposed to be with her…”
Margaret had seen enough. Her face crumpled with hurt. “Sophia, you don’t want to be Adrian’s mate? Why not? Haven’t we treated you well? I thought you were just being considerate of your sister, but now it sounds like you think you’re too good for my son!”
She was livid. She’d completely misread Sophia. It seemed like the girl thought she was too good for them!
If it had been me…
Margaret shook her head, trying to ignore the guilt gnawing at her.
