Chapter 8
I thought Adrian would back off after that incident, but I was wrong. Sophia showed up too.
“Adi, let’s go back and dissolve the mate bond! I don’t want to steal my sister’s mate! I’m… I’m such a terrible person!” Sophia grabbed Adrian’s sleeve, sobbing dramatically.
Adrian’s attention immediately shifted to her. He pulled her into his arms, comforting her softly.
“Don’t cry, Sophia. This isn’t your fault. I’m the one who messed up and made you suffer. I’ll go back with you right now!”
Sophia looked at me and her knees buckled like she was about to collapse at my feet. “Elena, I’m so sorry! Please don’t be angry with Adi. We really don’t have anything going on!”
Adrian yanked her back up and glared at me furiously. “Elena, are you happy now? All of this is just because you’re jealous of Sophia, isn’t it? I was so wrong about you!”
Their scene was causing quite a commotion. Students walking by stopped to stare and whisper among themselves.
I was not fazed at all. “If you don’t want your precious little sister to suffer, then take her home. You two are perfect for each other. Just stop bothering other people!”
Adrian’s face twisted with anger. “Elena, since this is your choice, don’t you dare regret it later!”
I turned and walked away without hesitation. Regret it? Never. The painful lessons from my previous life were burned into my
memory.
This time, I would not live for anyone else.
Adrian never showed up again after that day.
While working part–time at the training grounds, I met Garrett Sterling. He was a year ahead of me that could light up a room.

tall, lean and had a smile
After we got to know each other, he looked out for me constantly, making my job easier and giving me more time to focus on my
studies.
He was an excellent student and would tutor me in his spare time. I often treated him to meals to thank him.
Just as our friendship was deepening, Adrian started harassing me again.
He had somehow gotten my new phone number and bombarded me with messages daily.
“Elena, are you still mad at me? I know I was wrong. Please come back.”
“Elena, Sophia’s pregnant. The pup is mine.”
“I know this is hard for you to accept, but you have to believe that you’re the only one in my heart.”
“Elena, how long are you going to keep this up? Why won’t you answer me? What do I have to do for you to forgive me?”
I deleted every message and blocked his number.
After living with him for a lifetime, I never realized just how thick–skinned he could be.
“What’s wrong? Someone giving you trouble? Your cheeks are all puffed up like a little hamster.”
Garrett suddenly leaned over and gently pinched my cheek.
My face turned bright red as I chased after him, swinging my fists. “You’re the hamster! I’m… I’m not buying you dinner anymore!”

“No, no, no! I’ve been looking forward to this meal forever. I’m sorry, okay?”
He immediately turned around, begging for mercy while letting my fists bounce harmlessly off his chest.
He looked down at me, his feelings written plainly across his face. I panicked and looked away.
Perhaps my past experiences were too traumatic, so I instinctively resisted getting too close to Garrett.
He must have sensed my reluctance because he gracefully stepped back into the friend zone, quietly caring for me from a distance.
He never let me handle the heavy work at the training grounds, spent countless hours helping me with my studies and even though I insisted on treating him to meals, he would always sneak off to pay the bill so I would not spend a dime.
Through knowing him, I finally understood what it felt like to be someone’s favorite person.
