Chapter 5 Lucas Helps Out
Chris kicked the ring with his foot, and it rolled away into parts unknown. He called out behind me, “You’ll regret this! Keira, you’ve gone too far! There’s a limit to playing dirty tricks!”
His eyes were dark and heavy as if he was waiting for me to regret it.
But hearing these words, I just found them ridiculous.
Watching his eyes that stared at me intently gradually disappear, I wiped away my tears, feeling my past passion was- n’t worth it.
Lucas carried me steadily down the mountain, while Chris, for some reason, followed us from a distance.
When he saw Lucas‘ row of wedding cars, he frowned and blocked the car door. “Keira, what exactly are you trying to do? Your stomach can’t handle all this jolting around. Stop making a scene.”
Lucas put me in the car, and seeing my pale expression, he took out a blanket and glucose. “You don’t look good. Rest for a bit, I’ll be right back.”
He took off my shoes and wrapped me completely in the blanket before closing the door.
Lucas was very polite. “The elders are still waiting for us. Today I’m marrying the Lawrence family’s daughter, Keira. If you want, you can come to witness the ceremony too.”
Chris‘ gaze was sharp as a blade, and he spoke without thinking. “Elders? The elders are about to die, and the Lawrence family is history. What good does marrying her, do you? She chased after me for ten years—she’s just my lapdog. Now she’s pregnant, and you’re still marrying a tramp like her?”
Lucas‘ fists blurred with speed as he punched. He didn’t say anything, just kept hitting.
I sat in the car sipping glucose, taking back my thought that he was very polite.
At first, Chris didn’t fight back, but when he saw that he was about to get beaten to death and I still hadn’t gotten out of the car, he panicked. “Keira, what are you pretending for? I came here today to take you back. Get out of the car now and I’ll let bygones be bygones!
“What about your parents? How will you save your parents without me? I suggest you get out now and beg me!”
I laughed coldly in the car, feeling that I must have been blinded all these years, to like someone like this.
It was the unattainable that gave me rose–colored glasses. It was obsession and unwillingness. Now I felt that getting him would be worse than getting a pile of crap.
After a sudden brake, Rachel got out of the car screaming. She stood in front of Chris. “What right do you have to hit people?!”

But when she saw Lucas, her voice instantly weakened. “Lucas?”
Lucas shouted loudly, “2588!”
Rachel’s face turned red as she instinctively replied, “Here!”
Chris‘ face darkened as he grabbed Rachel. “What does this mean?”

Lucas smiled ambiguously. “Better behave yourself now that you’re out. I have important business today, so I’m leav- ing first. Keep an eye on your people.”
Lucas sat down next to me. Chris was still knocking on the window trying to stop us, but Rachel held him back.
The car sped away, and Lucas‘ intimidating presence shot straight to the top of my head.
I remembered the rumors and couldn’t help feeling scared. The rumors said he’d been locked up for ten years, had a violent temper, was fierce and evil, and beat and killed people without restraint–basically the kind of person who could stop children from crying.
I closed my eyes and threw caution to the wind. “Lucas, I want to see my parents first. Since the arranged marriage is already set in stone, you can’t ignore the Lawrence family. My parents are seriously ill, and I’ve been locked in the church unable to get out. I can’t marry you without seeing my parents.”
Lucas didn’t say anything, so I just went all out. “You’re an ex–convict, and I’m from a fallen family. I did chase that scumbag for ten years, but I don’t like him anymore and I don’t have a child. You don’t have to worry about that. I said I’d marry you and I won’t go back on my word.”
Lucas still didn’t say anything, and I got anxious. “What do you mean? I just want to see my parents and you won’t even agree to that? Even if the Lawrence family is about to fall, we’re not to be bullied by anyone!”
Lucas glanced over, and I shrank back my neck, feeling like he could see through my bluffing with just one look.
“We’re here. Get out.”
Only after getting out did I realize this was the road to the hospital. I felt a bit embarrassed but quickly adjusted my attitude. “Lucas, I’m sorry. I misunderstood you.”
When we entered the ward, it was completely different from what I’d expected. The room was full of people, and my parents seemed to be in the middle of a meeting.
I stood there stunned. My mother, who was always stern–faced, became gentle when she saw Lucas. “Lucas, come
here.
“If it weren’t for you, our family really wouldn’t know what to do.”
