“What the hell are you saying?!”
Chris stepped forward and grabbed my shoulders, shaking me. “How could you curse our child?”
I almost laughed. Chris was still putting on an act. I shoved him away. “What ‘our“? Is that child even yours?
“You’re still lying to me!”
Chris tugged at his tie, frustrated, avoiding my eyes. “Of course it is. We agreed–once the baby was born, we’d get
married.”

I thought of that illusion of warmth and the cold pain of the forceps. I couldn’t hold back a bitter laugh.
“I know everything. I saw you and Rachel in the church. You were cheating on me–right in front of Jesus Christ!
“You broke my leg on purpose. You stole my seal. You leaked my family’s trade secrets. My father treated you like family, and this is how you repay him? I raised a backstabbing mutt just because I liked you.
“I’ve told you so many times–I don’t love you anymore. The day of the car crash, I’d already had the abortion. Didn’t you say I was framing Rachel? I could barely walk because I’d just had surgery!”
Chris staggered. His eyes were bloodshot. His hands dug into my shoulders like he wanted to crush me. “That was my child! You stupid woman!”
Rachel suddenly shoved him hard. “What do you mean? You told me you never touched her!”
Chris looked at Rachel, his face grim, but said nothing.
Rachel slapped him, her voice shrill. “Say something! You fell for her, didn’t you? You’re her lapdog now? Do you like being a damn dog? You lied to me! What did you say when you begged on your knees?”
Chris‘ handsome face darkened with anger at such public exposure. “What else have you been hiding from me? Were you really stuck up in the mountains for ten years because Keira forced you to stay?”
“What does 2588 mean? Explain that.”
- That number had clearly rattled him.
Chris looked from Lucas to Rachel, then realization hit him. “You two were cellmates, weren’t you? Locked up to- gether all that time. Otherwise, how would he know your number? Rachel, you lied to me! You know how much I hate being lied to–how much I hate betrayal!
“Get out! My company’s about to go public. I can’t have a tainted wife. Just leave.”
Every “perfect one” loses their glow once they’re yours.

Chris, once insecure in front of me, now stood proud. He tilted his head toward me. “That child was mine. But it’s fine. If I could give you one, I could give you another. I realized over these ten years–I really did fall for you. I can’t just watch you marry someone else.
“Come with me, princess. I’ve got money now.
“We’re a perfect match. Lucas‘ background might be powerful, but he’s got a record. He’s dirty.”
Chris used to push me away and string me along just because he felt inferior–like I was out of his league, and he couldn’t stand being beneath a woman.
But now that I’d fallen, and he’d risen above me, he finally thought we were a match.
Suddenly, everything became clear. I started laughing, and then I cried.
Looking at the smug certainty in his eyes, I wiped my smile away. “Chris, I can’t believe I wasted ten years on you.
2 “Loving you was the most disgusting thing I’ve ever done.”
His face darkened with every word.
But I didn’t stop. “Even if I go bankrupt, even if I spend the rest of my life digging through trash, I’d never be with you. You’re the dirtiest one of all!”
