Chapter 8
I took Theo and boarded a train to a small, remote pack.
It was far from the center of power. The resources were limited, but life moved at a slower
pace. It was quiet and peaceful.
We settled in quickly. Within three days, I had rented a modest two–bedroom house. It wasn’t big, but the rent was only a quarter of what we used to pay.
More importantly, the school was just a ten–minute walk away. Theo could go to and from school independently, and I no longer had to drop him off or pick hind up.
With that, I finally had my hands free and found a stable full–time job.
After work, I picked up my old side hustle–freelance design. I took on small orders from nearby packs and trade networks.
The pay was modest, just a few tens of dollars a day. However, it added up and became a steady source of extra income.
Life without Ethan was surprisingly steady.
Theo had been quiet during our first week here, but he was far more adaptable than I expected, especially after I bought him a gentle, well–behaved puppy. Every day after school, he ran through the pack square with the puppy, making new friends along the way.
I never let him scavenge through trash again. Even if we weren’t well–off for now, he was growing up well. He shouldn’t have to live in a way that chipped away at his dignity.
My only wish now was for Ethan to sign the Breaking Mate Bond Agreement as soon as
possible. Only then could I truly walk away from the past and start a new life.
“Mom, the soup’s ready. Come eat!” Theo called from the kitchen.
I snapped out of my thoughts and smiled. “Coming!”

Meanwhile, Ethan had spent the past few days in a daze. He turned down all work and social engagements. He switched off his phone and locked himself inside an empty house, surviving on nothing but alcohol.
Until one day, someone pushed the door open.
Ethan stiffened. He stumbled toward the figure at the door like a drowning man grasping for air.
It was Mira. Her whole body was trembling with excitement.

She had dressed up today. She was wearing the most revealing outfit with flawless makeup, just like how she was during the peak of her fame.
She thought Ethan had finally come to his senses and returned to her. She couldn’t hold back a laugh of joy.
But the next second, Ethan shoved her
away.
Caught off guard, Mira fell to the cold floor with a cry of pain.
“Alpha Ethan, what are you doing?” she cried.
Ethan frowned, his tone ice–cold. “Why did you come to my house?”
Once Ethan saw their relationship for what it truly was, he didn’t even want to look at her again.
Mira panicked at his indifference and hurried to say what she had been holding back for so long.
“You’re mad because of Cheryl, right? I didn’t mean to drive her away that day. If you want, I can apologize to her.”
Ethan, who had been about to walk away, froze in place. He turned back slowly, his
expression stormy.

“You drove her away? When?” he questioned.
Regret flashed across Mira’s face, but she still tried to defend herself.

“She came to find you at Liam’s birthday party. I didn’t want her to cause a scene, so I told her to calm down outside.”
“You asked her to leave? How exactly did you ask?” Ethan’s voice rose sharply.
Mira was stunned by his fury. She had never seen him this angry before.
Embarrassment and resentment surged inside her. I was just an unwanted orphan, a mere stand–in for her. She couldn’t understand why Ethan cared about me so much.
Tears welled up in her eyes. She choked out, “She’s the one with the attitude. I only said a few words, and she ran off on her own. I still have a sore shoulder from when she shoved
me!”
She thought Ethan would feel sorry for her after hearing that, but the air turned suffocatingly still instead.
Ethan slowly raised his fist and slammed it into the wall behind her. The impact rang through the room like thunder.
“Are you saying she has an attitude?” His anger flared. “She has never scolded anyone. Even when she’s wronged, she keeps it to herself. How dare you slander her like this?”
Mira’s face turned ghostly pale.
Seeing his bleeding hand, she scrambled out the door in a panic.
Once the door slammed shut, silence fell over the room again. Ethan looked down at his bloodied hand, as if he no longer felt anything.
Suddenly, his phone buzzed again. He sharply glanced at the screen. Someone had just sent him my new address.
In that instant, his lifeless expression came alive again. Without any hesitation, he dashed
