Chapter 4
Madison appeared to have lost her mind as she lunged at me. However, she was stopped in
her tracks by Joseph, who blocked her way.
“Calm down, Madison. Just endure it for the time being.”
Madison slowly regained her composure upon hearing Joseph’s words. She glared at me and exclaimed, “Just you wait, Lucy! I’ll pay you back for everything you’ve done one day.”
I sat down and began eating, unfazed by everyone staring at me. When I asked Joseph to peel my shrimp for me, he obediently did as he was told.
Madison couldn’t stomach the sight any longer and excused herself to use the restroom. A
few moments later, Joseph also left.
“Study Ace, how did you manage to get the campus king to fall so madly in love with you?”
I lifted my gaze and said, “He’ll cling to you too, if you have good academic scores.”
The person laughed awkwardly, making it clear that he didn’t believe me. Sometimes, I wondered–if Madison and I had been men, would Joseph still have been willing to sacrifice himself so she could get into the university of her dreams?
I placed down my cutlery and headed for the restroom. Madison was crying as Joseph enveloped her in his embrace. “Joseph, why the hell do you keep taking her side?”
Joseph tightened his hold on her. “Madison, just endure it a little more. Everything will be oyer by tomorrow. I’m doing this to fulfill your dreams. I’ll make sure you get to enroll in Delasaint University.”
A smile finally broke across Madison’s face. However, her happiness was short–lived. Her expression instantly stiffened when we made eye contact. She quickly pulled away from Joseph, stammering, “L–Lucy, this is a misunderstanding. He was just comforting me.‘
Joseph’s expression went blank for a few seconds when he laid his eyes on me. “Lucy…”

“What? Do you want me to listen to your explanation?” I sneered, my eyes filled with contempt. I scoffed before continuing, “Let’s break up.”
I had only agreed to be a couple with Joseph to string him along, after all.

Joseph began begging me desperately. “The one that I love is you! I don’t want to break up with you.” He wasn’t sure how much of his conversation with Madison I had overheard, so
he didn’t dare say too much.
I pretended to be devastated as I pointed at Madison. “Then why were you hugging
Madison?”
Relief flooded Joseph’s heart. He strolled over to me slowly and said, “She was in a bad
mood just now. I was just comforting her.”
Madison chimed in, “He’s right. He was just comforting me.”
Despite how much Madison disliked me, she understood that helping Joseph win back my
heart was necessary.
I covered my face to stop myself from bursting into laughter. “No, I still want to break up with you. I don’t want something that’s been dirtied.”
Joseph’s expression soured as I turned on my heel and left the restaurant after saying my
piece.
I headed toward my next destination–the police station. I fixed a pitiful expression on my face as I spoke to the officer. “Officer, I don’t have a computer at home. Could you help me submit my university application form?”
The female officer was more than happy to oblige. She waved me over so I could submit my application.
“How many points did you score?” she asked.
“702 points.”

Shock washed over her features before a smile curved her lips upward. “You must be aiming for Clairefield University with such excellent results.”
I nodded. “I would like to join the School of Finance at Clairefield University.”

I received several gifts from the officers after I submitted my application form. One of the officers said, “Let us know when you’ve received your acceptance letter. Everyone will be so
happy for you.”
“I will,” I promised, feeling tears stinging the back of my eyes. I was determined to obtain the things I had always yearned for in my past life.

When I returned home, I saw Joseph squatting in front of my door. He hastily ran toward me when he noticed me. “Lucy, please listen to my explanation. Nothing is going on between Madison and me. She’s just my mother’s friend’s daughter.”
I took a step backward. “Don’t bother me. I’ll just pretend that I was unfortunate enough to get together with a scumbag, okay?”
“No…”
Joseph gazed at me feelingly. His phone suddenly started ringing. When he checked the caller ID and realized it was Frank, he moved to cut the call.
I grinned and said, “Pick up the call.”
He stared at me for a moment before picking it up. He turned around and faced his back toward me. He spoke in hushed tones, making his words hard to catch, but I knew what
Frank was likely telling him.
With his back still facing me, I declared, “I’ve submitted my university application form.”
Joseph still had his phone pressed to his ear even though it had gone silent on the other end
of the line.
My voice was laced with mirth as I continued, “You’re still thinking about my results, aren’t you?”

“You want Madison to take my place when it’s time for me to start university, don’t you?” I kept my tone light. “It’s not
happening.”
