Chapter 4
I sipped my tea again.
I used to love fruit tea for its sweet taste, but now I found that the sweetness was followed by endless bitterness.
The bitterness spread from my mouth to my stomach, churning like a meat grinder tearing everything apart inside me.
“Ugh…”
I had never experienced morning sickness before, but now I felt overwhelmingly hauseous.
Covering my mouth, I stood up and hurried to the restroom.
While dry heaving at the sink, I suddenly heard an unexpected sound.
It came from the men’s restroom.
“Stop… Gavin, I know I was wrong.”
“I won’t appear in front of Hannah again. Please, let me go…”
Nicole’s voice was breathless, pleading, but every word carried a seductive undertone.
As the sound of running water ceased, their voices became even clearer.
“Nicole, don’t push your luck.”
“Everything you have now is because of me. I can take it all away anytime I want.”
“If you know you’re wrong, then kneel…”
Gavin’s voice was low, and the rest of his words trailed off, replaced by heavier breathing.
I stood frozen at the restroom door, my entire body numb, as though I had fallen into another universe.
Everything around me was empty; countless voices screamed and roared in my ears.
Then, Nicole emerged from the men’s restroom, adjusting her clothes.
“Oh! It’s Hannah…”
Her tone feigned surprise, but the delight on her face was impossible to hide.
I didn’t respond to Nicole’s words, my gaze fixed on the space behind her.
“Hannah, stop looking. Gavin won’t be coming out for a while,” Nicole said with a smug smile.
“To be honest, I really admire you, Hannah. Gavin and I are already like this, yet you still cling to him.”
“If I were you, I’d have left long ago out of sheer embarrassment.”
She stepped closer, and a familiar scent wafted over me.
It was Gavin’s usual cologne–a crisp, woody aroma reminiscent of rain. It used to be my favorite.
But now,
the rose fragrance from Nicole intertwined with that woody scent, and my stomach churned violently.
I dug my nails into my palms, the sharp pain barely anchoring me.
Looking at Nicole’s triumphant face, I suddenly laughed.
“Nicole, do you love Gavin that much?”

Then tell me, who do you think Gavin will side with in a moment?”
With that, I slapped her hard across the face.
Smack
The sharp sound echoed through the empty restroom.
Nicole held her cheek, staring at me in disbelief.
She raised her hand, about to retaliate, but Gavin’s footsteps rang out behind her.
Gavin strode in, his tailored gray suit immaculate, the blue lapel pin on his chest a birthday gift from me.
Under the restroom’s harsh lights, the shadows on his brow obscured the emotions in his eyes.
1 couldn’t tell what he was thinking.
But his actions said it all.
He walked over and pulled me into his arms.
“Sweetheart, are you alright?”
Such tender concern, and yet he didn’t spare Nicole a single glance.
But the overwhelming scent of roses clinging to him made my stomach turn.
“I don’t want to eat anymore. Let’s go home,” I said, turning to leave without waiting for a response.
Back home, I rushed straight to the bathroom.
“Ugh…”
I emptied my stomach, the nausea relentless.
When I finally opened the door, Gavin was waiting outside.
“Sweetheart, are you feeling better?”
“Here, rinse with some salt water.”
Ever the considerate husband, he handed me the glass of water. I rinsed my mouth and said nothing, and he didn’t mention the events of the evening either.
But some things couldn’t be erased by silence.
Lowering my gaze, I looked at the abortion appointment confirmation on my phone.
Tomorrow, it would all end. This was the gift I was giving Gavin.
The next morning, I woke up to an empty bed.
Gavin wasn’t there.
But he left a note:
“Sweetheart, there’s an emergency at the hospital, and I had to rush over.”
“Breakfast is in the living room. Make sure you eat.‘
So thoughtful!
I smiled as I tore the note into pieces, then opened a text message from Nicole.
“Gavin’s with me. We went at it until dawn!”

I thought I would feel a pang of heartache, but there was nothing.
After finishing the breakfast Gavin had prepared, I hailed a cab to the hospital.
On the way, the female driver asked me, “Miss, why isn’t your husband coming with you for your prenatal check–up?”
I smiled.
“He’s asleep in another woman’s bed right now!”
“I’m not heading to a check–up. I’m going to get an abortion.“.
The driver fell silent. Through the rearview mirror, I saw the look of sympathy in her eyes.
For the ten–minute ride, the car was completely quiet.
